One of our local grocery stores has a doughnut deal, where if you buy five donuts, you get a sixth one free. My husband and I stopped in to take (delicious) advantage of the special one day, but at the checkout, the cashier got flustered and rang up too many doughnuts and then was confused about the free-donut-special. She finally decided that all was well and gave us our total. I am no math guru, and the sum sounded good to me, but my husband is a mathematician, and he knew something was wrong. He looked at her screen and pointed out with kindness that she had not charged us for enough doughnuts.
She was surprised by his honesty, and grateful.
I wasn't surprised by his honesty, but I am always grateful for it.
As we left the grocery store (fully paid-for doughnuts in hand), he told me that earlier that morning he had been listening to a sermon about honesty with money and how much more God can do with money that is honesty spent/saved/earned/given/tithed...as opposed to us thinking or feeling that we have "gotten away with something" when we are not fully honest about a transaction.
He said the sermon, which was based on Scripture, was very impactful for him, and "worth paying full price" for a few doughnuts.
I completely agreed...I just didn't catch the math error in the total like he did! :-)

I received a sales call at work today from a guy who was almost ready to purchase (Yay!), and as we talked things through, he shared about the importance of every penny in his budget. As we spoke, I realized that he was calling from a state in which our company has a group-pricing partnership established (an even better value for him).
He was ready to buy, and our company's regular business pricing is very competitive and fair. But in realizing that he/his business could save a little money (even if it meant that our company would make a little less money), I knew what I had to do.
I knew.
I mentioned the group-pricing value to him, and I heard his elation in receiving this news. Even as we continued the phone call, he began the necessary paperwork to benefit from it.
I knew that we served other businesses in his state and his area that were receiving a better value, and thus, I knew that I had to also offer the same value to him.
The truth is, I would not have felt good or right about not doing so. And I must trust that God will take care of the "lost" amount of money that our company will not make because I was honest.
