"Why was everyone so mad at Jesus?  Why did they want to kill Him?", she asked our middle son in humility and complete sincerity during an 11 PM phone call after a Wednesday night church service that had taught about the last days of Jesus' life on earth.

What would we say in response to this question if someone that had never heard the account of the life and death of Jesus asked us about it?

Why were they so mad at Him?  What had Jesus Christ ever done wrong?

  • Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, (4) and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.  ~Matthew 26:3-4
Why was everyone so mad at Jesus?
  • They all answered, “Crucify him!”  (23) “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.  But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”  ~Matthew 27:22-23
Why was everyone so mad at Jesus?
  • The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. (17) They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. (18) And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” (19) Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. (20) ...Then they led him out to crucify him.  ~Mark 15:16-20
Why was everyone so mad at Jesus?

Speaking in an even and kind tone, I heard our son explain to his friend that the chief religious people were jealous at the popularity and power of Jesus, and that they didn't understand or wouldn't accept that He was the Messiah, and so they convinced the (Jewish) people to turn against Him and kill Him, and the crowd went along with it.

What would we say if someone that had never heard about Jesus asked us to explain why the people were so mad at Him ?

"Do you really buy-into this six-day Creation story?  I have been taught 'science' my whole life, but I am open to understanding this God-thing more.  Can you explain it to me?"

This text came to our oldest a few days ago from a friend of his who is a new and eager Believer.  He is willing but all he has ever known is what public schools have force-fed him since almost birth, which is the Big Bang Theory and carbon-dating.

What would we say about the entire world being created in six days and (only) about 6,000 years ago?

Do we buy-into that?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (2) Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

(3) And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (4) God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

(6) And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”... (8) God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

(9) And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. (10) God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

(11) Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. (12)  ...And God saw that it was good. (13) And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

(14) And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, (15) and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. (16) God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. (17) God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, (18) to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. (19) And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

(20) And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” (21) So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems... and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good...  (23) And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

(24) And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. (25) God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

(26) Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,  and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

(27) So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  (28) God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”...

(31) God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.  ~Genesis 1:1-6, 8-21, 23-28, 31

One of my sisters-in-Christ meets weekly to teach the Bible to a friend of hers who came to faith in Christ because the woman "saw something different" about my friend and her family...and she wanted it.  The "it" was Jesus and the peace and hope He provides, and through studying the Word of God together, this woman has changed the address of her eternity.

Do people "sense" Christ in our lives?  Are we willing to answer a seeker's questions and invest in them to share about His truth?

~~~
Are we asking people questions about their faith?
Can we answer Biblical questions if they come our way?
Why not?
