Sometimes when I am watching our kids play a soccer game, there will be a perfect pass down the field and toward our opponent's goal, but on occasion, our receiving player is too far ahead of the pass (and ball), and thus we lose possession (and the opportunity) of scoring because we got too far in front of the ball.

I've also watched outfielders misjudge a fly ball and miss a catch because they got out a bit too far in front of it, and it dropped short of their glove.

But professional athletes aren't the only ones who miss an opportunity or thwart a play because they have "gotten too far in front of it".

We do it all the time.  (Or at least I do.)

Why are we always trying to force things?  Why do we push, pull, nag and control so often...instead of abiding with the Lord, and letting Him lead?

There's a fine line between doing God's will, and forcing our own, and darn it...I keep crossing it.  ...And crossing others...and getting in God's way.

Newsflash!  God doesn't need us to make things happen.  He has already put plans in motion.

Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.  ~Isaiah 25:1

God has plans.

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.  ~Colossians 1:17

He's got our day taken care of.  He's already worked-out the kink in our think.  He has devised an outcome before we've even said "welcome", and in perfect faithfulness He has done wonderful things, things planned long ago (Isaiah 25:1).

If we would just ask Him what's on His docket today.

If we would just inquire of our role, instead of forcing it.

This is what the Sovereign Lordthe Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved.  In quietness and confidence is your strength.  But you would have none of it.  ~Isaiah 30:15

So--why do we keep/continue/persist in getting too far out in front of God, instead of letting Him lead us?  We (too often) keep pridefully taking possession of today, and in doing so, we miss our opportunities to partner with Him and to be a part of what He is (already) doing.

What the Lord desires from us is that we (His children) would join Him in what He is doing.

And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.  ~Micah 6:8

Lord, help us to walk humbly with You today, instead of getting out in front of You.  Amen.

The Lord desires that we would inquire of Him and His plans today, and that we would abide with Him in His execution of them (not ours).

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed."  ~John 8:31

Are we His disciples?  And if we answered, "Yes", then...are we abiding in His word and allowing it to abide in us?  (Why do we keep getting in His way?)

Lord, help us to abide in You today.  Amen.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.  ~John 15:5

Isn't this the truth?   When we get too far in front of God, and we don't abide with Him we can do nothing.

That's exactly how we feel when we get out in front of God instead of letting Him lead us---like we are accomplishing nothing

Let's let the Lord take the reins today and call our shots.  It's ironic, but we lose possession of His purposes when we pridefully take possession instead of letting Him lead.

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him...  ~Psalm 37:7
