I read my Bible this morning, and usually some words jump off of the page and into my soul...and I know that the Lord meant them for me...and you.

But not this morning.  Not for twenty minutes of reading and writing and trying to be open.  I thirsted, but was not quenched, and I know it was me and not God...but I just couldn't connect.

And sometimes it's through music.  An old hymn of faith, or a newly-released contemporary Christian song can break my heart wide open, and I am singing and crying, and experiencing intimacy with the Lord.

But not this morning.  My mood and my temperance panted, but there was no quenching.  I know it was me and not God...but I just couldn't connect.

But then I pulled into work and something caught my eye along the driveway in.

A deer, and then I noticed that there were about five deer, all of them bedded down and resting on a bed of pine needles, welcoming the day in peace, rest, and stillness: doing just what their Creator had created them to do at that moment this morning: rest in Him and be who He made them to be.

And it wasn't a chapter in the Bible, and it wasn't a song sung about Jesus, but as soon as I saw that deer, I knew that the Lord meant it there for me...and you.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.

(2) My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.  When can I go and meet with God?

(5) Why, my soul, are you downcast?  Why so disturbed within me?  Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.  ~Psalm 42:1-2, 5

We do pant for you, Lord.  Just as the deer pants for water, we are thirsty for You.  We are parched by this world and its ways.  We get tired and drawn and weary from no water...but You--You satisfy our needs, our desires, our soul pantings.

And one way or another, through Scripture, through music, through Your people, through service, or through Your Creation...You meet us, Father, and we experience intimacy with you, Lord, and we connect.  You jump off of the page and into our soul.  Or You break our heart wide-open through circumstance or song, or gratitude, or by the sheer realization that You are Who You say that you are.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God (Psalm 42:1), and You quench us, Lord.  One way or another, You will be found by us if we are sincerely seeking You.

Can't connect with God lately?  Keep panting for Him.  He will not allow our soul to thirst for long before refreshing us.

Lord, may we welcome this day in peace, rest, and stillness--doing just what You, our Creator have created us to do at this moment: to rest in You and to be who You made us to be.  Amen.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
