In the Bible, God talked to people and He gave them messages to share with others.  God's Word is for those who know Him and also for those who don't.  Whether or not we listen to what God says is up to us.

God told Ezekiel the prophet (one who speaks on behalf of God) to speak against Israel and her "sanctuaries".  God was not happy with the Israelites' allegiance to everything-but-Him.  They had sanctuaries honoring the wrong things, and their hearts were not honoring God.

The Lord had a stern message and consequence to convey to them.  He was speaking in judgement to Israel, but we (also) know our sins before God and the other sanctuaries in which we offer worship (not to the Lord).

I can't look God in the eye right now.  He knows our sins.  Is He calling us to repent of anything today?

When was the last time we acknowledged and asked forgiveness for our sins?  Or do we/are we (like the Israelites were) ignoring our sin before God?  Even laughing it off?

Do we have other "sanctuaries"?  Are we (spiritually) off-track?

Then this message might be coming to us today from the Lord (and not just to the Israelites who were off-track).
God's consequence will come against us and against anyone not honoring God above all else.

Then this message came to me from the Lord: (2) “Son of man, turn and face Jerusalem and prophesy against Israel and her sanctuaries.

(3) Tell her, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am your enemy, O Israel, and I am about to unsheath my sword to destroy your people—the righteous and the wicked alike. (4) Yes, I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked! I will draw my sword against everyone in the land from south to north. (5) Everyone in the world will know that I am the Lord. My sword is in my hand, and it will not return to its sheath until its work is finished.’

(6) “Son of man, groan before the people! Groan before them with bitter anguish and a broken heart. (7) When they ask why you are groaning, tell them, ‘I groan because of the terrifying news I have heard. When it comes true, the boldest heart will melt with fear; all strength will disappear. Every spirit will faint; strong knees will become as weak as water. And the Sovereign Lord says: It is coming! It’s on its way!’”

(8) Then the Lord said to me, (9) “Son of man, give the people this message from the Lord: “A sword, a sword is being sharpened and polished.  (10) It is sharpened for terrible slaughter and polished to flash like lightning!

Now will you laugh?  Those far stronger than you have fallen beneath its power!

(11) Yes, the sword is now being sharpened and polished; it is being prepared for the executioner.

(12) “Son of man, cry out and wail; pound your thighs in anguish, for that sword will slaughter my people and their leaders—everyone will die!  (13) It will put them all to the test.  What chance do they have? says the Sovereign Lord...

(24) “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Again and again you remind me of your sin and your guilt. You don’t even try to hide it! In everything you do, your sins are obvious for all to see. So now the time of your punishment has come!

(26) ...Now the lowly will be exalted, and the mighty will be brought down.  (27) Destruction! Destruction!  I will surely destroy the kingdom.  And it will not be restored until the one appears who has the right to judge it.  Then I will hand it over to him.  ~Ezekiel 21:1-13, 24, 26-27

What chance DO we have? says the Sovereign Lord (Ezekiel 21:13).

God is real, and so is His holiness.  He cannot compromise on sin, and if we are (compromising on sin), then we will answer for it.

What chance DO we have?...  (Ezekiel 21:13).

Well--if these (deathly) consequential realities are true for those who shun God and do not take Him seriously in this life...then wouldn't the opposite reality be consequential for those that honor God?

Those who do not laugh at Him.

verse 20 vs 24 =  Why consequence?
God does mean business.  Those who scoff at Him now and today will see His rule and reign and true authority one day soon...and it will not be pretty for them..

For us, if we are not spiritually right with God.

May we have no sanctuaries except those honoring the One Who deserves all honor.

God's wrath against those who are not faithful to Him is frightening, but is He not justified?
If we are confused about the intention and holiness and sovereignty and power of the Lord our God, then let His Word make God's power and authority very clear to us.

The Lord will reign in majesty and power over all the earth one day: are we loving/serving/worshiping Him in the here and now in preparation of that Day?.

No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. (4) They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. (5) There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.  ~Revelation 22:3-5

God's Word is for those who know Him and also for those who don't.  Whether or not we listen to what God says is up to us, and so then is our eternity.

What/Who are we honoring in our sanctuary today?
