As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.  ~Proverbs 27:17

Or...my interpretation for this verse as I have experienced it over the past week is: As iron sharpens iron, so a sister sharpens a sister

I've been sharpened this week by my best friend, my sister.  Her faith in every sense of the word has educated, taught, and exemplified to me what a Godly woman and friend looks like, and she has sharpened me.

The Bible outlines the makings of woman-of-God, but it is a rare gift to experience a woman of noble character in the flesh, because, as God's Word says: she is hard to find.

But find her I have, and God brought this friend into my life just fourteen months after I was born, and we have been sharpening each other ever since.

I am blessed to have a sister who teaches me (and many) how to live for the Lord through her quiet example of grace, mercy, servitude and love.  She's everything that Proverbs 31 calls for, and she sharpens me.

In the span of one (very busy) week, my BFF sister reminded and proved (again) to me that she is worth far more than rubies.  She cooked wonderful things, she did countless loads of laundry for our group, and she always and everytime works with eager hands.  Up late and up early, she gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family.

She is always thinking of what is next and what else can be done, and she is an angel of initiative.  She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

A friend of our family once compared my sister to a duck swimming: cool, collected and poised above the surface, but working hard and paddling steadily underneath.  Yes, my sister's example to me is like iron sharpening iron.

Her faith runs deep and high.  She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue, but gossip and slander never are.  She sharpens me.

Nobody's perfect, but (in my eyes), she is close, and I praise the Lord that she and I are close too.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: (29) “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

There are many Godly women, but this one is closest to me, and I believe that she deserves to be praised.

If we have a friend, a sister, a brother, or another that sharpens us and our faith...don't take them for granted today--we praise the Lord for such examples (and sharpening) in our lives.

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.  ~Proverbs 27:17

Proverbs 31

(10) A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies.

(11) Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. (12) She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

(13) She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.  (14) She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

(15) She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.

(16) She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

(17) She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.  (18) She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

 (19) In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

(20) She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

(21) When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.  (22) She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

(23) Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

(24) She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

(25) She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

(26) She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

(27) She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

(28) Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: (29) “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

(30) Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  (31) Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.  ~Proverbs 31:11-31

Thank you for being you, Sister.  You have always sharpened  me and shown me what a true friend and Proverbs 31 woman looks like.

Blessings,

  1. Dear Sarah: I am so happy and feel so blessed that Caleb had such a wonderful graduation, yesterday and that everyone had such a wonderful time together, celebrating such a well earned accomplishment. You and Stephen are such wonderful parents and have such wonderful children. You are truly blessed! I’m sorry that I missed getting together with everyone to wish him well. I had planned to be there but everything had changed at the last moment. I hope that we will be able to get together, soon. All my best wishes to Caleb and the family! Love Cheryle and the family here, always!
