Corona Devo 1927
How much labor do we apply to the way that we look each day? Our outfit, our shoes, our accessories: are they matching? Are they trending? Are they brand name?
Does it take us a while to do our hair, face, and make-up? Do we pour time and energy into our physique and body?
It seems that the older I get, the less I worry about what I wear and how I look, but as a younger girl and woman, I spent much time setting my heart on outward-appearance and the popular/trending/social/monied concerns of life. It would be fair to say that I ran after all such things. And if we are blatantly honest with ourselves, many of us still run after such things from time to time. It's hard not to.
However, these days my concerns are usually less about outfits and more about outcomes. Health: Is everyone okay? Will they be okay?".
Our minds drift to finances and our long-term provision and long-term-care. We can labor and spin about any number of countless topics from sickness and sorrow to finances and death. There are always bills to pay and things to repair, and the concerns of life can suck us underwater if we are not careful.
But, it's more than being careful, isn't it? We must be intentional about where we place our peace and faith and trust. If we depend on worldly tangents, we will always be living in a state of desired-acceptance (from others) and emotional flux. There is no solid ground when it comes to the world's provision. People and things are an ever-changing and fickle market.
But God...now He is solid ground. We can put our trust and faith in the Lord if we do not want to worry. Our Father knows our concerns, but more importantly (and divinely), He knows what we need. And if we will seek our Lord and His kingdom, then God will give us all these things as well.
I was reminded of God's all-encompassing provision over us the other day when I came across some wildflowers that stopped me in my tracks. They were gorgeous. They were not trying to look gussy or flashy or hip or trendy, and yet, they were breathtaking. They had not prepped and primped, or labored or spun to provide their beautiful petals and hues...they were just wearing what God had dressed them in, and they were striking.
Why do we worry so much?
“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. (28) If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!
(29) And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. (30) For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. (31) But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. ~Luke 12:27-31
I can't be totally sure, but I think that God's Word just called you and me, "you of little faith". And (of course), God is not wrong. We do lack faith when we get tossed in the waves and concerns of our physical needs and wants, instead of staying anchored in the assurance that God will provide all that we need.
He will.
We can trust Him today.
Let's skip the clothing sale and spend a few less minutes doing our make-up or our daily work-out, and let's spend a few more minutes seeking His kingdom and setting our heart on Him today.
He clothes the grass of the field (wild flowers) in splendor (Luke 12:27): We can trust God to clothe us in His splendor too.
