We try so very hard to figure it all out.  ...To map out our lives.  ..To discern our callings and our giftings and to capitalize on our today and our tomorrow.

But God never said we had to do all of that.

In fact God never said that we could do all of that.  God clearly and simply and matter-of-factly said that all that we have to do is: follow Him, and... if we do/if we will/if we are (following Him), then He will make it (whatever "it" is) happen in our lives.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  ~Matthew 4:19

He will put His plans in place if we will follow Him and defer to Him.

He will make us.

He will make us into exactly who and what He has for us to be.

Remember the disciples?  Before they met Jesus, they believed in God and had been raised reading His Word.  They were working their jobs.  They had livelihoods and wives and families.  While they were doing what they knew to be doing (work, family, faith) God met them and made them into what He wanted them to be and do.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  ~Matthew 4:19

We do not have to figure out all of the details of tomorrow.  (We can't.)  We do not need to decide our future or detail-out every angle of our life: we need to follow Jesus.  And He will make us what He is going to make us.

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. (19) Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (20) At once they left their nets and followed him.

(21) Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, (22) and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. ~Matthew 4:18-22

While the disciples were doing what they knew to be doing (work, family, faith) God met them and made them into what He wanted them to be and do.

While we are doing what we know to be doing (work, family, faith) God will meet us and make us into what He wants us to be and do.

A couple of weeks ago, our son signed up to volunteer for a weekend tournament happening in our city.  Hosted in multiple places around town, he told me that he would have preferred to be assigned to a location closer to our house...but his assignment was across town.  Dropping him off at around eight in the morning, we picked him up about twelve hours later, and then he worked a similar shift the next day.  And he loved every minute.

I wasn't sure what he was going to be doing all weekend, and neither was he.  But he knew that he was available and able to work, and so he signed up.

It turned out that he had been assigned a position that did not exist prior to this year.  This new job dealt with numbers and precision and people: each of which he is really with.

The administrators in charge of the event ended up liking our son a lot.  His assigned role was a perfect fit for him, and he performed a valuable service to others.

God knew that.

God assigned him that.  At that location.

Our son didn't choose that job or location, he was just willing and able to work.

God made the rest happen.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you...”  ~Matthew 4:19

The managers of the event asked him if he would like to work the following weekend as well?  And our son's answer was a resounding yes. From that weekend, other doors have opened for him and I know he was assigned exactly where he needed to be.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you...”  ~Matthew 4:19

We try so very hard to map out our lives and to discern our callings...

But God never said we had to do all of that.

In fact God only told us to do one thing: follow Him.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  ~Matthew 4:19

He will put His plans in place if we will follow Him and defer to Him.

I remember graduating from college and not being sure of what I was going to do next.  Circumstances opened up an interview opportunity for me and so I went under the sole premise of gaining "experience", because (I told myself), I was definitely not going to "stay in town" and work there.

Nine years later...three titles later...numerous accomplishments and advancements and team-building and all-to-the-glory-of-God moments later...I knew without a doubt that my initial interview was scheduled by God.

I was a recent college graduate and I knew that interviewing for jobs was what I should be doing.  And so I did that.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you...”  ~Matthew 4:19

Are we trying too hard to figure and plan and plot our lives out?

It's not necessary.  All that is necessary is that we follow Him.

And (wait and see!) the rest will fall into place.  God will make us into what He wants, if we will follow Him.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you....”  ~Matthew 4:19

He will put His plans in place if we will follow Him and defer to Him.

He will make us.
