What situation or person or emotion is out of our control and our comfort zone today...and what will we do about it? What should we do about it?
~~~
Driving down a two-lane country road the other day, there
was a car approaching me from the other direction. It slowly crossed over the yellow dividing
lines and approached me head-on for a few scary moments.
But in plenty of time and distance for safety, the car then
faded back over into its proper lane, and I wondered what he had been
avoiding.
Then I saw a stone in the road that the other driver had cautiously swerved to miss...it was moving. A small turtle was diligently marching across the road and that car had swerved
to avoid him.
The turtle’s head protruded out of the shell and was held
high while its feet moved with apparent determination across the country
road.
I was glad that the car in the turtle's lane had come into mine for a (few scary) moments. That driver made the choice and made accomodation for the turtle's well-being and safety.
That car could have easily crunched that slow-crossing turtle and its shell without a second thought, but somehow in foresight (and fore-heart) that driver had compassion on a solitary turtle moving across the road.
Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. (2) Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! ~Hebrews 13:1-2
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. ~James 1:27
“Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly. ~Leviticus 19:15
I've had "turtles" standing in front of me in line at the store or bank. You have had turtles still parked when the light turns green in front of you. We have turtles that take longer to understand a concept whether in conversation or in demonstration. We have "turtles" in our lives.
How do we react to "turtles crossing our road"? With compassion? With foresight and fore-heart for them?
Are we seeing beyond the temporary moment of inconvenience, or do we huff and puff?
Do we lay on the horn? Do we criticize and cut with our words? Do we use sarcasm and tear with our intent? (I'd prefer not to answer this one, because my intake-of-Jesus directly affects my outpouring of love, joy, peace and patience with others.)
Swerve today.
What if we proceeded with caution and swerved to accommodate/avoid/allow for any "turtles" crossing our road today?
- Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. ~James 1:27
- By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” ~John 13:35
- Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. ~Psalm 82:3
- Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, (4) not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. ~Philippians 2:3-4
Even if it means going out of our lane (for a few scary moments) to protect someone who's vulnerable today, swerve to accommodate them if we feel led to do so.
Make the effort to keep someone safe if they need it. Take heart. And if necessary, let's cause our heart to swerve out of love, instead of smash out of circumstance or emotion.
