If I were to ask you what your most special possession is, what would you say?

That's a toss up for me: It might be a three-way tie between my Kitchen Aid mixer (I love to bake!), my coffee maker, (I love coffee!) and my Bible (I love Jesus!).

Okay, so the Bible would (of course)!) win out, but I would also count the other two mentioned items as special possessions to me.

I have a best friend that still has a treasured teddy bear from when she was young.  Raggedy and well-loved, it is still a comfort to her once in a while during sad times or after an injury or trauma.  For her, that teddy bear is a special possession.

What's your special possession?

...HA!  Don't answer that!  It turns out, in the Bible, God points out that this is a trick question!

We should only have one special possession, and I was close to the correct answer with one of my three answers.  (Here's a hint: it wasn't my mixer or coffee maker.)

The Lord tells us that He (alone) should be our special possession, and (of course), He's right.

God was actually speaking (in Ezekiel Chapter 44) to His preists, or those that he had chosen to serve Him when He said: “The priests will not have any property or possession of land, for I alone am their special possession" (Ezekiel 44:28).

We have many things (and people) that we value in life...but God doesn't mince words about how He feels about our affections being divided before Him.  He wants all of our heart, and if we are going to be possessive of something, He wants it to be Him.

Our Lord, our Mighty God, our Maker and our Father in Heaven is worthy of being the center of our attention and our most special possession.

The Book of Revelation in the Bible gives us a glimpse or two of what Heaven will look like, and the main thing will be God as our main thing and our special possession.

One day we will join other Believers in Heaven and we will celebrate our Lord alone (our special possession), because He is worthy to receive glory and honor and power:

At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. (3) And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. (4) Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. (5) From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder...

(6) In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures... (8) ...Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

(9) Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, (10) the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: (11) “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”  ~Revelation 4:2-6, 8-11

But we should not delay until going-to-Heaven to honor God as our special possession.  Today is a great day to give Him the glory and honor He so richly deserves.

How do we treat our other special possessions in life?  I clean my coffee maker out each day carefully and I am careful and intentional with my mixer and the upkeep of it.

What about our relationship with the God of the universe?

Are we careful?  Are we intentional?  Do we take care to take care of our Lord and our time with Him as a special possession in our life?

Do we spend and invest more time/attention/money/energy on other special possessions in our life than we spend and invest with God?

Our answer is probably convicting.

But the good news is that we can change our answer, and our partiality today.  We can commit to Christ as our #1 special possession.

God's got a high calling on His people (His priests), but we are up for the challenge, aren't we?

They will teach my people the difference between what is holy and what is common, what is ceremonially clean and unclean.

(24) “They will serve as judges to resolve any disagreements among my people. Their decisions must be based on my regulations. And the priests themselves must obey my instructions and decrees at all the sacred festivals, and see to it that the Sabbaths are set apart as holy days...

(28) “The priests will not have any property or possession of land, for I alone am their special possession.   ~Ezekiel 44:23-24, 28

If God were to ask us what our most special possession is, could we say, "Him"?

And if we were to ask God what His most special possession is...did we know that God would say "us"?

  • “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. ~Deuteronomy 7:6
  • And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands.  ~Deuteronomy 26:18
  • For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His special treasure.  ~Psalm 135:4
  • ...who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.  ~Titus 2:14
  • Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you.  ~Isaiah 43:4

~~~
We must be careful and be thoughtful and prayerful about what we raise up as special possessions in our lives.  Everything and everyone else will fade away, but only God will remain, and the Lord our God has chosen us to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth (Deuteronomy 7:6).
He is our special possession, and we are His special possession.
I'd like to go back and change my previous answers about what my special possessions are.
The Lord...  He is my final answer and Halone is my special possession (Ezekiel 44:28).
Blessings,
Sarah
