"I feel like I have wasted my whole life. Like I haven't done anything that has really made a difference or mattered."
Whoa!
Weren't we just talking about grocery lists and hectic schedules? And then, WHAM! My friend got authentic, and transparent, and vulnerable all in one heavy sentence.
I wasn't expecting that to come from her mouth. I wasn't expecting that to come from her heart.
But...if we are honest, that idea/thought/doubt/fear has come from all of our hearts from time to time, hasn't it?
It's okay to admit, and it was okay for my buddy to say. It's understandable and even relatable for us to be in that "place".
But (the Bible says) that it is not okay for us to stay in that "place", because God's Truth is not in any statement that claims that we do not have value or purpose.
The Lord knows that we feel that way sometimes. He sees us today. We all tramp through the trenches of life once in a while, and God knows our thoughts. He created us. He knows everything about us, even (and especially) our intimate intricacies.
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. (2) You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. (3) You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. (4) Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. ~Psalm 139:1-4
God knows us...and He is with us.
I hope that we know that. But in the trial/in the trauma/in the pain/in the disappointment/in the exhaustion/and in the throes of life: remember (and we can be reminded by His Word as He speaks it into us!): Remember that the Lord is with us. Always, Beloved.
(5) You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. (6) Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
(7) Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (8) If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. (9) If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, (10) even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
(11) If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” (12) even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. ~Psalm 139:5-13

"I feel like I have wasted my whole life. Like I haven't done anything that has really made a difference or mattered."
Nothing...NOTHING could be further from God's Truth about us.
We shouldn't be ashamed to have these thoughts cross our mind, but we should realize/remember/and cling to the Lord's Word's as He breathes life back into our depleted spirits today. He meant to make us into exactly who we are, and God meant for us to live the life we are living. But the critical puzzle piece that makes the madness manageable: is Him.
God created us, He loves us, and there have been no surprises to Him about the paths we've taken or the days we've lived.
(13) For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. (16) Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. ~Psalm 139:13-16
The first argument that we must make (to ourselves) against feeling like a failure in-life or at-life is that we matter to God.
Because we do.
Psalm 139, verses 1 through 16 demonstrates this, and God placing these verses in front of us today is no coincidence. He sees us. He perceives our thoughts from afar, and sometimes He must counter them.
We have not wasted our whole life. We have done things that really made a difference and that mattered.
And--best of all, we have today.
I don't know my friend's whole life story, or what prompted her to say and feel like a failure. But I know my life story and the details that have made me feel unworthy and unaccomplished for the Lord in my life.
And--best of all, we have today.
If we desire to have more purpose in our lives, perhaps we must evaluate where/what/who we have been finding purpose in.
If the Lord is not our answer...then let's begin again today: Fresh for our Lord, and infused with His purposes and His promises.
We have today.
- See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. ~Isaiah 43:19
- Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. (23) They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ~Lamentations 3:22-23
- Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, (24) since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ~Colossians 3:23-24

"I feel like I have wasted my whole life. Like I haven't done anything that has really made a difference or mattered."
Let's have a new conversation today: and this one is sponsored by our Savior:
"I feel like I have a purpose in my life. Like I can do something that can really make a difference and matter."
- For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. ~Ephesians 2:10
- He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, (10) but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. ~2 Timothy 1:9-10
God does not desire, will, or purpose that defeat or purposelessness should come from our mouth or our lives. He desires the exact opposite for us.
- The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. ~John 10:10
- Lord, you are mine! I promise to obey your words! (58) With all my heart I want your blessings. Be merciful as you promised. (59) I pondered the direction of my life, and I turned to follow your laws. (60) I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands. (61) Evil people try to drag me into sin, but I am firmly anchored to your instructions. (62) I rise at midnight to thank you for your just regulations. (63) I am a friend to anyone who fears you—anyone who obeys your commandments. (64) O Lord, your unfailing love fills the earth; teach me your decrees. ~Psalm 119:57-64
