The longest Psalm in the Bible is 119. It's long, but in reading it...I know why everything is in it. It's everything we feel, we fear, we seek, we need.
What are we feeling today? What are we facing today? Psalm 119 covers it.
Praise. Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. ~Psalm 119:97
Sorrow. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. ~Psalm 119:28
Acknowledging of the Almighty. Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. (90) Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. (91) Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. ~Psalm 119:89-91
Gratitude. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! ~Psalm 119:103
Beseeching. How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. ~Psalm 119:9
Blessing. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. (91) Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. ~Psalm 119:90-91
Devotion. I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord, and I will obey your decrees. (146) I call out to you; save me and I will keep your statutes. (147) I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word. (148) My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises. ~Psalm 119:145-148
Hope. My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. ~Psalm 119:50
Honoring. You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. ~Psalm 119:68
Requested justice. May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause; but I will meditate on your precepts. ~Psalm 119:78
Forgiveness. I long for your salvation, Lord, and your law gives me delight. (175) Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me. (176) I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands. ~Psalm 119:174-176
Everything that we feel and experience in life is covered in Psalm 119. If the author (presumed to be David) touches on all that we are...and all that we seek...How would he finish such an all-encompassing piece?
Inept.
Imperfect.
Sinful.
In need of a Savior are we.
I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands. ~Psalm 119:176
~~~
Our hearts to God. Our praise of Him. Our foundation in Him. Our cries to Him.
And Psalm 119 ends-with-God where we must begin-with-God: acknowledging our sinfulness and His righteousness.
In our life for Him and even in our best efforts and righteous acts.... Inevitably, we fail, or falter, or forget. And we need God all over again.
I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands. ~Psalm 119:176
David ends just where we begin, and God is there...always. In our initial acceptance of Him into our lives. In our daily-seeking. In our faltering. In our feasting-of-faith and in our famine-of-faith: God is present, and He always will be. Psalm 119 teaches us that. In all of our stages and ages, our Lord assuages.
Blessings,
Sarah
