A couple years back, we were blessed to visit Mount Rainier in Washington state.  Huge and massive even from far distances, the mountain seemed to grow even larger and more powerful as we came upon it.

Have you ever gazed upon the majesty of a mountain?  Or a range of mountains?

Tall.  Solid.  Majestic.

We, by nature, are drawn to look to something solid for help: A person.  A bank account.  Logic.  Science.  Leaders.  Nature.  Mountains.

Lift your eyes to the mountains.

Powerful.  Strong.  Immovable.  (Seemingly) timeless.

Mountains appear to have been here forever and as if they will be here forever.  Something (permanent and huge) like this seems like where our help could come from.

...Should we find our help in the mountains of nature, or the "mountains" of this world?  The strong "peaks" that man/science/culture/emotion have erected often seem like the logical choice for our help.

Is this where our help comes from?

NoMountains may be bold, big, majestic and seemingly impenetrable, but no earthly (natural or created) institution or person will be where our help comes from.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?

(2) My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth.  ~Psalm 121:1-2

Even the tallest, biggest, oldest mountain, although awesome...will not ever be our "help".  Our help, always and forever and today comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2).

I like the sound of that, don't you?

My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth.

And if we like the sound/comfort/strength/help of that...wait until we hear what else Psalm 121 promises that we will experience with our Lord as our help:

(3) He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;

(4) indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(5) The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

(6) the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

(7) The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life;

(8) the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.  ~Psalm 121:3-8

Amen.  All we can say is aaaahhhhh, and Amen.

Yes, our help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2).  Our help does not come from the mountains, the spouse, the job, the substances, the salary, the jackpot, the images, the degree, the followers, the fame, the medicine, or the acquisitions.

Any of those will help for a moment, for a season, for a fix.  But only the Lord helps in the unseen areas and realms of our hearts and lives.  Only the Lord knows us and our insecurities and our frailties.  And only the Lord helps us in them.   ...Always and non-stoppingly, and even as we slumber, He will not slumber.

Twice in this Psalm God reminds us that He watches over us and He will not rest in His care over us.  He will not slumber.

(3) He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;

(4) indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.  ~Psalm 121:3-4

Five times in the eight verses of Psalm 121 the Lord affirms that He will watch over us.  Our Lord is a mountain that will never be moved.  The solid majesty of our God in our lives is more palpable than a mountain.  He is here.  And He is our help.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life...

(8) the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.  ~Psalm 121:3-8

~Psalm 121:7-8

It is in our human nature to look to physical and emotional "mountains" to seek our help from.  But it is in our spiritual nature to seek our help from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2).

All-knowing and all-powerful even from far distances, our Lord's heart for us comes into focus as we draw nearer and nearer to Him and His Word.

He is our help today.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?  (2) My help comes from the Lordthe Maker of heaven and earth. (3) He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; (4) indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (5) The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; (6) the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. (7) The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; (8) the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.  ~Psalm 121:1-8
