Oh goodness.  Some days are just so heavy.  ...Like there is a darkness all around us.  It hangs over us like a low, stifling ceiling, and it creeps into us like a rotting-smell into our nostrils--wrecking our moods, our thoughts, our attitudes.

What creates the darkness around us, I can't say, and...I'll have my days of darkness and you'll have yours.  But this I do know--the darkness does come and there are days and seasons that we are forced to walk in it.

But I do know something else...there is also lightA great light.  And those of us who have walked in the darkness but who believe in the great light...we appreciate that Beacon, and we have come to know and love and yearn for that great light.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned...  ~Isaiah 9:2

Deep darkness.

I don't want to admit my familiarity with that deep darkness, but I must.  It moves in like a heavy fog and just sits on top of our lives for a heavy moment.  We can feel lost, trapped, smothered, or hopeless.

We often can't quite put our finger on why nothing is quite right.  But nothing is.

Sometimes we just have darkness.  All people do, because this world is not our home.

  • For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ...  Philippians 3:20
  • For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  ~Ephesians 6:12

Sometimes we wrestle against (Ephesians 6:12) and walk in darkness (Isaiah 9:2).  But always...always we have a light Source...no matter how dark it gets.

A light has dawned.  -Isaiah 9:3

Jesus Christ is that light in the dark.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  ~John 8:12

Jesus Christ is our light in our darkness today.  And everything that we seek, that we need, that we desire is found in Him.

(2) The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned...

(6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

(7) Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.  ~Isaiah 9:2, 6

Shining through the darkness and giving us a glimmer of hope in the deep darkness: Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor.  He is our Mighty God.  He is our Everlasting Father.  He is our Prince of Peace.

We can have hope, and we do have hope because His light has dawned over us.

Do we need to share about our darkness with someone?  Or receive direction and healing?

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor...  ~Isaiah 9:6

~~~
Do we seek to dispel the power of the darkness in our lives?
Jesus does.
And he will be called...Mighty God...   ~Isaiah 9:6
~~~

Has the darkness abandoned us?  Orphaned us.  Removed us from community?

Remember and embrace-all-over-again today that we are in the family of God..

And he will be called...Everlasting Father...   ~Isaiah 9:6

~~~
Did the darkness decorate our life with chaos and a lack-of-order?
And he will be called...Prince of Peace.   ~Isaiah 9:6
~~~
Jesus is truly everything we seek and everything we need.

The darkness does come...we cannot deny that.  But as we battle the darkness, we can be empowered by the truth that a light has dawned.

Jesus Christ is here.  And He illumines our way out of the  darkness.  He gives us and He is our great light.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned...  ~Isaiah 9:2
