While at the zoo the other day, we were able to catch a close-up glimpse of a beautiful bald eagle. Bold and strong and majestic and fearsome, it stood only about ten feet from us.
That gave me the close range view of his strong body, sharp beak, and feathers.
Those feathers: there seemed to be just enough and in all the right places. I was not aware of an eagle's perfect alignment and patterning of feathers before. And I don't mean color pattern...I mean, every feather seemed to be in perfect position: layered and arranged in precise symmetry and placement. One row on top of the next, perfectly placed and fitted to make flight possible, effective, and intentional.
Sometimes we can forget the intimate, specific, absolutely-precise detail that our Creator has gone-to in order to create an eagle as an eagle.
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” (21) So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (22) God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” (23) And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. ~Genesis 1:20-23
And not only did God create the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, plants and the sun and moon: but He created us, and He created us intentionally in His image.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (27) So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. ~Genesis 1:26-27
Sometimes we can forget that we were not happenstance. Our Lord made (absolutely!) no mistake the day that He made us. Every piece and part and nuance of us was on purpose.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. ~Psalm 139.:13-15
Just as every feather is placed with purpose and precision and in perfect position on every eagle's wing...
Today is not a fluke:
...all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. ~Psalm 139:16
Our responsibilities today are not by chance today:
“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. (15) To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. (16) The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. (17) So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. (18) But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
(19) “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. (20) The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
(21) “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ ~Matthew 25:14-21
Our circles of influence today are with God-ordained purpose. For instance, King David knew the Lord and served Him, and people followed David.
The Lord has given us the same privilege and responsibility. Is anyone behind-us today? Are we discipling someone? Sharing our faith-story with anyone? Are we investing in anyone so that we might share the hope of Christ with them?
These were the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; (2) they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed; they were relatives of Saul from the tribe of Benjamin)... (8) Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles in the mountains. ~I Chronicles 12:1-2, 8
How are we doing in this pattern that the Lord has purposely mapped for us?
The feathers on an eagle's wing were placed in position with sovereign precision. The Creator's knowledge and intelligent feather and wing design give this bird the ability to soar to great heights.
With perfect intention and purpose, God created you and me to be exactly who we are today, where we are today, and how we are today. And...God's got work for us to be doing today.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~Ephesians 2:10
You and me, Brothers and Sisters in Christ: we are enough, and wherever we are today--we are in just the right place for God's plans for us. We are perfectly aligned and fitted to make our life-in-Christ possible, effective, and intentional today.
...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 1:6
Let's soar for our Savior today!
