The Biblical Book of Amos, Chapter 4: A teaching to wives.

Warning: It's going to sound harsh.

Note: It might not apply to you.

Admittance: In some ways it applies to all of us...

If you are not a wife, then feel free to search your heart to see if God is revealing areas in your heart and life that are in need of repair anyway.  (He does that.)

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,
you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy
and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!”

(2) The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness: “The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks. (3) You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the Lord.  ~Amos 4:1-3

~~~
Hooo-weee!  How mad does the Lord have to be to call certain women "cows"?
Pretty mad.  Pretty fed-up.  Pretty disappointed in their allegiance to themselves instead of their allegiance to Him.
And here we have it: Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria (Amos 4:1).
These women are abusing, oppressing and even crushing the poor and the needy.  They are telling their husbands to “Bring us some drinks!”
They are calling the shots.  Not the Lord, and not their husbands.
In this city (Bashan on Mount Samaria), women (wives) had left their Biblical and cultural role of moral-pillars, and had moved into being mothers-of-menace.  They had abandoned God's design for them and their roles.  They had abandoned the Lord.
And the Lord was not pleased.  The Lord sent Amos to speak to the women about their wandering focus and their self-promotion.  The Lord was warning these women who were taking and administering negative-control.
The Lord calls to them and warns them: Hear this...
Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!” (Amos 4:1).
Hear this...the Lord won't stand for this much longer.
The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness: “The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks. (3) You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the Lord.  ~Amos 4:2-3
Years have passed and times (and punishments) have changed, but I think we get the idea of what God is threatening when He says: “The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks. (3) You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the Lord (Amos 4:2-3).
The women/wives/cows (and the New Living Translation version of the Bible says "fat cows") have rejected God.  They are living devoid of Him, and the Lord does not mince words about consequences to such lifestyle choices.
Warning: It's going to sound harsh.
Note: It might not apply to you.
Admittance: In some ways it applies to all of us.
Wives of today...
Women of today...
People of today...
May we hear the words of Amos as he speaks the heart of our Lord.
There is a reason and a timeliness and a relevance to every Book and Chapter and Verse in the Bible.  Let the Lord rake Amos 4 over our hearts today.
In our world, in our cultures, in our nations, in our marriages, in our families, in our selves: We must admit that our allegiance has shifted from our Lord onto our selves.
The Lord has seen the switch. He is pretty mad.  Pretty fed-up.  Pretty disappointed.
Admittance: In some ways it applies to all of us, and here we have it: Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria (Amos 4:1).
Let's get honest: we are calling the shots.  Not the Lord.
Our Nation was founded by men and women seeking the freedom to live, work, and serve God freely.  But we have left our Biblical and cultural roles of moral-pillars, and (look at our Nation/institutions/acceptances)--we have moved into being menaces.  We have abandoned God's design for us and our roles.  So many have abandoned the Lord.
The Lord is not pleased and He is warning those who are taking and administering negative (Godless) control.  Hear this...
Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!” (Amos 4:1).
Hear this...the Lord won't stand for this much longer.
The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness: “The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks. (3) You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the Lord.  ~Amos 4:2-3
It's no joke.
God is offended by our rejection of Him as a people and as His people.
But these cows (us) can amble back to the Lord whenever we decide to.  And in Amos Chapter 5, the Lord tells us how to.
This is what the Lord says to Israel: “Seek me and live; (5) do not seek Bethel... (6) Seek the Lord and live, or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire; it will devour them, and Bethel will have no one to quench it.  ~Amos 5:4-6
Admittance: In some ways it applies-to and invites all of us...
Let's feel free to search our hearts to see what God is revealing that is in need of repair.  And let's seek Him and live today.
Blessings,
sarah
