Well, it was almost-time for a new shampoo and conditioner in our shower the other day and when every last drippity-drop of the old ones were gone, I put in two brand new bottles: one of shampoo and one of conditioner.

But when it was time for their maiden voyage in the shower, I had a problem: without my glasses on, I could not read which bottle was conditioner and which was shampoo.

I squinted.  I held the bottles up close and waaa-yyy back.  I found myself amazed that I truly could not discern the writing.  (Am I getting that old, that my eyes that bad?)

Apparently.

Finally, I popped the lid on each bottle and squirted a tiny bit of each into my palm.  The consistency of conditioner is generally thicker than shampoo.

My on-the-spot science experiment worked, and I figured out successfully which bottle was shampoo and which was conditioner: not by reading the label, but by experience, gut-instinct, and a little faith.

Sometimes in life, the writing is not on the wall.  Sometimes we don’t have any idea what the answer is or what the good-choice or Godly choice is.  Sometimes we just can’t discern which…way…to…go.

God will not abandon us in that quandary or indecision.

Somehow, someway, He will clue us in on which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner.

It may not be written in clear instructions before us.  Instead, we may have to use our experiences.  We may have to rely on our God-gut and conscience.  And always, we will have to rely on faith.

If the writing is not on the wall for us today, that doesn’t mean that the Lord isn’t going to give us the answer another way.  He will.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  ~Proverbs 3:5-6

But perhaps today it is not that we are unsure of an outcome, it is that we are buried/pressed/suffering under something so heavy that we can't imagine a way out.  We can't see a way out.  We are frozen or tethered under something larger than us.

But in these situations too...the Lord is near and the Lord is here.

Feel Him.  Sense Him.  Watch for Him.

One way or another, God will provide a way out.

How do we know?  He promises us.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.  ~I Corinthians 10:13

This life and this world ain't easy.  Relationships, following-Jesus, living-for-the-Lord: these things do not come with a full and fool-proof daily map and instruction book.

So often we are confronted with choices and opportunities and pressures and temptations that we can't figure out all of the details about.

We squint.  We investigate closely.  We "take a step back".  We lament that we "don't know what to do".

When we are unsure or at-a-loss, God will direct.
Try Him.

It may be by experience, gut-instinct, or by faith, but if we (keep) "laying it down" before Him, our Lord will pick it up and point us in the right direction.

He will.

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.  For the Lord is a God of justice.  Blessed are all who wait for him!

(19) People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you.

(20) Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. (21) Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”  ~Isaiah 30:18-21

Lord, please (Please!) show us Your way today that we might walk in it.  When we cannot discern or "see" the clear choice, provide us the resources to figure-it-out, stand-up-under-it, or sense what is best in Your eyes.  Amen.

Blessings,

sarah
