Is there a decision to be made in our life? A choice that needs chosen? Two roads are diverging, and we know that the one that we choose will make all the difference, but...which one to choose?
Colleges, jobs, spouse, house, investments, vacations, friendships, activities...everything requires choices.
But, how do we determine our decisions?
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. ~James 1:5
There is no trick or hack to hearing from the Lord.
There is no secret code or elite club to having God reveal his thoughts to us (mankind).
Just ask Him. Implore of Him. Submit to Him. Defer to Him.
And the Lord will reveal His thoughts to us.
...indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, (4) and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, (5) then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. ~Proverbs 2:3-5
We have some big decisions looming in our family. Facing them (or deciding them!) alone would cause me to crack from stress, pressure, worry, and the weight.
But Believers do not make decisions on their own, or at least we shouldn't if we want to be in God's will.
David is our best Biblical example of imploring of the Lord for direction in our daily decisions.
To go to war, or not to go to war? That was David's question, and so he asked the Lord.
When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors,” (2) he inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”
The Lord answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”
(3) But David’s men said to him, “Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”
(4) Once again David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.” (5) So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah. ~I Samuel 23:1-5
Not once but twice David asked God for direction before this battle, and then David trusted what God said.
And (of course), God was right.
Again and again, David would ask the Lord what to do, and again and again, God would answer David. We are not so different from David. If we will ask God, He will direct us.
David said, “Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me. (11) Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Lord, God of Israel, tell your servant.”
And the Lord said, “He will.”
(12) Again David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men to Saul?”
And the Lord said, “They will.”
(13) So David and his men, about six hundred in number, left Keilah and kept moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he did not go there.
(14) David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands. ~I Samuel 23:10-14
David's answers from God were immediate, and sometimes ours will be too. But sometimes there is a waiting in the wisdom that comes from the Lord.
If we are waiting for God's direction today...keep waiting. We can have faith in God's processes and we can trust that His answer will come.
Because...it will. He reveals his thoughts to mankind.
For the Lord is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his thoughts to mankind. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth. The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is his name! ~Amos 4:13
It's almost unbelievable and it certainly doesn't make sense that Amos puts these opposing God-variables in one sentence. On one side: God does these amazing, awesome, God-only things, like shaping the mountains and stirring the winds. And yet--on the other side of the God-scale....is us. God created us, He forgives us, He loves us, and He reveals his thoughts to us (Amos 4:13).
Wild, isn't it? And wonderful.
The same God who shapes mountains is going to reveal his thoughts to us.
And so, we should keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking on His door with our questions.
What question is on our heart today?
Ask. Seek. And (in His time), He will reveal the direction or answer.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." ~Matthew 7:7
Again and again, David would ask the Lord what to do, and again and again, God would answer David. We are not so different from David.
Big choices weighing? Difficult decisions looming? Important life-choices needing to be chosen?
If we will ask God, He will direct us.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. ~Proverbs 3:5-6
For the Lord...reveals his thoughts to mankind. ~Amos 4:13
