Dove on a housetop.
It just sounds calming doesn't it? Like it could be the soft name of a vanilla paint hue, or the latest titled scent offered at Bath and Body Works: Dove on a Housetop.
But what if an actual dove on a housetop was what greeted us this morning as we sipped our coffee and peered into the pages of our Bible?
It is what looked at me as I looked up from my morning coffee cup and verses. A dove on a housetop is exactly what I saw.
The Lord sends us a dove on a housetop today.
He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. (11) When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. (12) He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. ~Genesis 8:10-12
The Lord brought Noah a message and a sense of peace through a single dove. The return of the dove with an olive leaf in his mouth meant that the flood waters had receded enough for trees to be found and for habitation to occur once again.
The flood was over.
Peace.
God uses His Creation and His Word (the Bible) to send us a dove today.
We are loved. We are safe with the Lord, and we can have peace in the Lord and because of the Lord.
Are we facing heavy things today? Are we battling difficult people today?
We can have peace because of the Lord today.
Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord, how foolish people have reviled your name. (19) Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever. ~Psalm 74:18-19
He won't forget the lives of His afflicted people, not today and not forever. The Lord sends us a dove on a housetop today. The Lord sends us His peace today.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. ~John 14:27
Could it have been by chance that I glanced the dove on the housetop today? Perhaps.
Is it possible that this was a coincidence and not a God-cidence? Maybe.
But the Bible is living and active and always relevant. God's Word and His blessings and His peace are available to every one of His children every day of the year, regardless of whether or not we glimpse a dove on a housetop.
Read God's Word today and receive His peace and blessing today. He freely gives it:
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. (2) All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: (3) You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. (4) The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.
(5) Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. (6) You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. (7) The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
(8) The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. (9) The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. (10) Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you.
(11) The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.
(12) The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands.
You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. (13) The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. (14) Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. ~Deuteronomy 28:1-14
Look up. Let's sense God's peace and blessing over us today: He gives it.
Look up verses in the Bible. His Word just waits for us.
Look up today. We might just see or experience a dove on a housetop.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; (25) the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; (26) the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ~Numbers 6:24-2
