Corona Devo 9
We are so busy worrying these days. These nights. Every conversation carries us to a new high or low. We are fickle.
The news has a different tangent that they run with every hour. There is a vaccine! (Emotional high!) We will have to wait months for conclusive results with it. (Emotional low.) Stimulus money might be sent to us from Uncle Sam. (Emotional high!) But we might be locked down in our houses so we can’t spend it in person. (Emotional low.) And so on it goes. And this entire spin on the Emotional Roller Coaster only took 5 minutes of newsreel!
I sometimes feel exhausted even though I am not really going anywhere or doing much. It’s a Corona-sponsored circus in our minds.
But then as I was putting away laundry, I looked out the window and saw a bird. Coasting gracefully in high circles above the trees in our backyard. Carefree. It relaxed me to watch him (or her). There was no worry in his wings. There was no fear in his feathers.
While our kids were shooting (soccer balls!) in the backyard, I came out to watch. We all turned our eyes upward as a hawk glided purposefully overhead. Hanging from his talons was a small chipmunk, or maybe a mouse or mole. It was like watching a nature show, right above our heads, and it was natural and beautiful, and calming.
Then when I was doing dinner dishes something flitted outside the window and caught my eye. In the tree outside were two black-capped chickadees. They hopped carelessly from branch to branch. I don’t mean that they looked unsteady or shaken. I mean that they hopped frivolously, as if they hadn’t a care in the world (carelessly). They seemed unaffected by the worries of the Corona epidemic. They were relaxed, and as I watched them, I relaxed. I felt my pulse slow and the (invisible) weight on my shoulders lighten.
What do these birds know that we do not?
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:26---
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? ~Matthew 6:26
I am not one to necessarily look for “signs” from God, but I would also be a fool to ignore the repetitive message that these birds gave me (and you!) yesterday.
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? ~Matthew 6:26
Jesus words are so simple here and so matter-of-fact, but there is also authority in them. Jesus is telling us to... Look at the birds of the air (Sarah/ put-your-name-in-here);
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you (Sarah/put-your-name-in-here) not much more valuable than they? ~Matthew 6:26
If the birds are not frenzied and flitting around storing up food and toilet paper---why are we?
They don’t grow food or stock up food—they just trust that their Creator will provide what they need each day. How are we doing with that kind of mentality and trust in our Creator?
God feeds them: and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. ~Matthew 6:26 He takes care of all of their needs. He will also take care of all of our needs. We have to trust Him and trust in Him. And we have to stop flitting around in worry and anxiousness.
Depending on where you are in your spiritual walk—some of these Truths might be new to you, but they are Truths (from the Bible). God created the earth, and He cares for it and its wellbeing. He created the animals and He cares for their needs. God created us, and He made us in His image (So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. ~Genesis 1:27).
He created everything, but we are closest to His heart. And He is with us during our frantic and frenetic times. Are you not much more valuable than they? ~Matthew 6:26 You are so valuable to Jesus. He sees the roller coaster that we are on with daily Corona updates and mandates, and I really believe He urges us to calm down, and to fret less and to soar more.
Today, remember how valuable you are to God. Let there be less worry in your wings, and no fear in your feathers.
Blessings,
sarah
