Who will show us better times?
It is a fair question to ask, especially in these times.
Not that life is always fair, or that "times" are always fair. But if someone asked us "Who will show us better times?" we would understand and commiserate with their question, wouldn't we?
Ponder it once more: Who will show us better times?
Will the current leaders show us better times?
Will new leaders show us better times?
Will less sickness, infection and fear show us better times?
Will more money in our pockets show us better times?
Will a decrease in social unrest show us better times?
Will an increase in community and fellowship show us better times?
Many people say, “Who will show us better times?” Let your face smile on us, Lord.
7 You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. ~Psalm 4:6-8
I have heard (online and outloud) many people ask, “Who will show us better times?”
If you have ever felt the loving yet invisible hand of the Lord lift you out of a dark place, then you have experienced who will show us better times.
We are looking for "better times" in a lot of places, but God says to look for no further than Him.
He meets us where we are at. He scoops us up and cradles us and our hurts and frustrations with life. He smiles on us, and it changes things. It changes our outlook and our situations, and His smile on our lives changes us.
If we can plug into God, we can plug into a greater meaning of life than just the here and now, and a there is greater joy in that perspective, because we connect into God's perspective, which is bigger than here and bigger than now.
Plus, we think we know what will bring us joy, but God has more abundant harvests than our tiny earthly-focused (and impatient) brains can imagine. For example, the other night, I was starved. We were driving, and I saw a food truck. Not just any food truck, an "Italian sausage sandwich/with marinara/and grilled peppers and onions/on a big fresh Italian roll" food truck. It took every muscle of restraint in my mind and body not to turn my vehicle into the parking lot where the food truck sat calling to me. I wanted that sandwich.
But, I kept driving home, and in a few more minutes, we sat around the table as a family, feasting on turkey burgers and macaroni salad. The kids were laughing at a silly story that my husband was telling in great animation and I realized that this was a feast. For my heart and soul, and my belly: and I would have missed it if I had done what I wanted, and snarfed down a sausage sandwich in a parking lot. God had a more abundant harvest for us: filling us (and our families) in much deeper ways than a mere sandwich could do.
God gives us greater joy, and He has abundant harvests that we cannot access unless we tune out the distractions and tune in to Him.
Also, God's word and His ways give us peace that allows us to sleep at night. Even during these Corona/unprecedented/uncharted times. We don't have to lie awake in worry or fear because God has us covered. We can trust Him. He provides for our needs and we are safe in Him.
Many people say, “Who will show us better times?” Let your face smile on us, Lord.
7 You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
