Spread the word!

And why wouldn't we?  The proof and pleasure of God working in our daily lives is newsworthy.  We share recipes, political opinions and family updates: why wouldn't we spread the word about how God's Word or influence is changing us?

Has He touched your heart lately?  Has God reached into your life through a friend speaking truth, or a song, or a verse?  We should spread that word to give God credit and to encourage others!

Did God put someone on your mind, and when you reached out, you were just what they needed?  Spread the word!  Share God's movement, and it will move others close to Him too!

When Jesus was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum, a man possessed by an evil spirit (Mark 1:23) came to him. Jesus cast out the evil spirit and how could the onlookers help but spread the word?

“What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” (28) The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee. ~Mark 1:27-28

We experience daily hope, realizations and experiences with the Lord.  They may not be "dramatic" (and sometimes they may be!), but an experience with Jesus is always worth sharing.  Spread the word!

A day or two later, Jesus was speaking to more people and a man with leprosy came to Him. (We can approach our Lord with any issue that plagues us: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.)

...“If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.  (41) Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!”  ~Mark 1:40-41

Not wanting His fame to spread quite yet, Jesus had cautioned the man not to tell anyone, but how could you help it?  The man couldn't...

But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere...  ~Mark 1:45

When God shows up in word or deed in our lives, it is natural for us to "proclaim" it to others.  God does things that cannot be explained in any other way.  He heals hearts, He arrests thoughts, and He changes us.  How can we not spread the word!?

In fact, there are times when we have been touched so deeply by God that we forget everything else surrounding us.  Nothing else matters anymore because He has seen us and our situation. Have you been there?

The woman at the well had that kind of experience.  Jesus knew her.  He accepted her.  He recounted her sins but cast no disdain or judgement over her.  No one had ever treated her that way.  She had to spread the word!

(28) The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, (29) “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” (30) So the people came streaming from the village to see him.  ~John 4:28-29

There is a humility in proclaiming what God has done for us or within us (Will they think I am crazy?), but the closer we come to Jesus, the less we care what others may think of us.  The more we care about telling others to think upon Him!

Like these "spreaders of God's news" in the Bible, let's be bold in spreading the word about Jesus!

Not many of us will be "visited by an angel" like the shepherds were, but the message they heard is as relevant today as it was over 2,000 years ago.  And we should be spreading the word!

I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. (11) Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (12) This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”  (13) Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, (14) “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”...(17) When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, (18) and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. (19) But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. (20) The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.  ~Luke 2:10-14, 17-18

The miracle of Jesus birth is still exciting news that needs to be spread today.  Even if people have heard the story, often they have not been affected by it.  God seeks to affect us, and our hearts, thoughts and lives by His encounters with us.

But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus... ~Mark 1:45

People need the healing touch and word of Jesus today more than ever.  What if by us spreading the word, large crowds (would) soon surround Jesus?

Spread the word!

Blessings,

sarah
