22 When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him. 23 Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”

24 The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”

25 Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.  ~Mark 8:22-25

Sometimes faith is a process.  Sometimes healing takes time.  And Jesus knows what He is doing during the stages.

This is an interesting story from the Book of Mark.  It's the only time (that I know of) that the healing of Jesus did not happen instantaneously.  This one took time.

We can't be sure why, but I have a few inferences.

Jesus can do anything, but things go more smoothly when we take an active part in His healing processes in our lives.  This man was not seeking Jesus.  Some people brought a blind man to Jesus (Mark 8:22).  Do you have people that you have invested years of prayer into?  Praying that they will draw near to God.  Praying that they will stop seeking and serving themselves and realize the depth, bounty and blessing of serving God?  Keep praying!  Some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and our prayers may bring someone to Jesus too.  We must always keep praying for our people, but the moment that these people seek God's healing on their own, it changes the game, and it can change their "healing".

The city that this man was from (Bethsaida) was unfortunately known for its lack of faith in God.  If it is difficult for a miracle to happen for a person who may not be invested in Jesus, imagine the barriers of God bringing His favor to an entire city (or Nation) of unbelievers.  Lord, I pray Your protection and blessing over the people's hearts in our cities and our Nation.  May we hunger for Your presence and may Your favor rest on us, Lord.

Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”

24 The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”  ~Mark 8:23-24

Have you ever gone through something devastating in your life?  A death/divorce/recovery from an addiction/or a hurt so deep that it took your breath and spirit away for a while?

Healing from this comes in stages.  Sometimes we have been consumed and "blinded" by a situation or pain for so long that it takes us a while to see straight.  "I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly.".  Can you relate?  We can go through seasons where there is a dullness to life, almost like a shroud covers us and blurs our perception of people and life around us for a while.  But that doesn't mean that we are not in God's process of healing.  It just means that it may be more beneficial for us to take the healing in stages.

If the man had popped open his eyes and "seen clearly" from the get go, it might have been too bright/shocking/jarring for him.  There is always a purpose in God's processes, and it is often for our own good and proper healing.

Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.  ~Mark 8:25

Jesus will make things in our lives clear that have been fuzzy.  It will occur on His timetable and possibly in stages, but Jesus will restore our spiritual vision and heal our hearts.  It might not be in real-time (but it could be), but it will definitely be in Heaven’s time.  Jesus brought the eternal healing for our hurting souls when He hung on the cross.

So many things feel unfair and seem to blind us here on Earth, but if we allow Jesus to "open our eyes", we can catch a glimpse of the dazzling realization that although our journey on Earth is filled with momentary struggles, one day believers will open their eyes to an eternity in Heaven, filled with everlasting triumph in Christ.

The trials that "blind" us today will not "bind" us tomorrow.  Sometimes faith is a process.  Sometimes healing takes time.  And Jesus knows what He is doing during the stages.
