Have you ever been jealous of someone else's stature/station/position/calling in life?
It's human nature to think, "Why them, and not me?" But I felt God's Word reminding me today that He calls the shots, He gives people their shot, and there are no "big shots" or "little shots" in God's line-up.
God has specific jobs for each of us, and He has assigned each of us unique ways to serve Him, duties to perform, and in each of these areas--He has chosen us. God's call is a blessing, and it will bless our emotional and spiritual well-being to not to brood about the call He has placed on others.
My Biblical-blueprint-realization for this idea came to me from the Book of Numbers where God blatantly "called forward" certain people to fulfill certain roles:
(5) Then the Lord said to Moses, (6) “Call forward the tribe of Levi, and present them to Aaron the priest to serve as his assistants. (7) They will serve Aaron and the whole community, performing their sacred duties in and around the Tabernacle.
(11) And the Lord said to Moses, (12) “Look, I have chosen the Levites from among the Israelites to serve...
(21) The descendants of Gershon... (25)...were responsible to care for the Tabernacle, including the sacred tent with its layers of coverings, the curtain at its entrance, (26) ...and all the equipment related to their use.
(27) The descendants of Kohath... (31) ...were responsible for the care of the Ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the various articles used in the sanctuary, the inner curtain, and all the equipment related to their use. ~Numbers 3:5-7, 11-12, 21, 25-27, 31
Just as we have team captains, bosses and community/spiritual leaders: God had assigned certain Israelites tasks in leadership and service. And that's okay.
Someone needs to steer the ship. It might be us. And that's okay. It might not be us. And that needs to be okay with us too.
God has Call(ed) forward (Numbers 3:6) each of us to serve as his assistants (Numbers 3:5) in our own ways. The world needs second, third and last-place finishers, cheerleaders and people-in-the-stands. There is purpose in every role, and God knows that. Today, He wants us to know that too.
Some of us have no desire to be "team captain" (if you will) and to perform their sacred duties (Numbers 3:7) in full public viewing. Instead the call of our hearts and lives is being responsible to care for details and situations that occur outside of the limelight. And without people like The descendants of Kohath... who ...were responsible for the care of the Ark...and all the equipment related (Numbers 3:27, 31), the show would not go on, would it? There are many cogs in a wheel that keep it turning, and each cog is imperative. We (and our sacred duties as assigned/gifted to us) are each irreplaceable to God.
Sometimes there is purpose in the void, and I realized a positive-silence in these verses. Did you notice that it doesn't mention any of the Israelites complaining, whining or gossiping about those that God had assigned to serve as the priest's assistants or to perform their sacred duties in and around the Tabernacle (Numbers 3:6-7).
That silence shouted out to me. Far too often I am guilty of questioning why and how "they" were chosen over me. Their house, job, car, money, vacation, health, family, faith, etc. It's human nature to think, "Why them, and not me?"
But the Israelites got it right in accepting their assignments from God and also accepting His assignments to others. God calls the shots, God gives people their shot, and there are no "big shots" or "little shots" in God's line-up.
God blatantly "called forward" certain people to fulfill certain roles in Numbers: God does the same for us today.
We have to tune in to Him, and to the gifts and talents that He has given us...but when we do: Look out! When we become aware and engaged in our assigned "duties"--this is where fulfillment and purpose come alive!
God needs all of us to play the parts He assigns to our hearts. Some people seem to be "born leaders", and if the Lord has gifted someone to lead, why are we standing in their way or brooding about not being first-in-line ahead of them?
Similarly, some were made to encourage, support and champion others. Their flame continually lights-up others until a blaze burns feeding off all embers and members.
This is our Christian mission! Many assistants and many sacred duties, but all of us ablaze in the effort of serving God in the roles He has assigned us.
We need to worry less about other people's assignments and more about how God is calling us forward to serve as his assistants today.
There are no "big shots" or "little shots" in God's line-up.
Blessings,
sarah
