Sometimes the storms of life bear down so heavily on us, that the best way to describe our emotional state is "beaten down" and close to being "washed out". We feel unprotected from the lightning and thunder striking our lives. We need shelter from the storm.
Sometimes it feels as if a relentless army is persisting, advancing, pushing, jabbing and even wounding us. We seek shelter from the shrapnell and explosions of anger/relationships/pride/ and sin, but the bombardment never ceases. We need shelter from the attacks.
The on-going battles wear us down and weaken our spirits, our resolve, and our faith. We've grown poor in the resources that matter most and because of the constant conflict, we are in spiritual poverty. We need shelter.
(12) Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers.
(13) Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.
(14) For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. ~Psalm 48:12-14
For those of us who have been bullied by life lately or have gotten water-logged in the storms that have been raging over our hearts or minds: we have a mighty God who provides shelter and he will guide us. We have a Protector who is our shelter.
Psalm 48 gives us a bold image of God standing tall and regal. Strong and fortified, like the ramparts of a victorious city.
God's word reminds us of the sturdy and robust shelter that He is over our lives.
Pain, disappointment, sorrow, and exhaustion can destroy our defenses, but Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. (Psalm 48:12).
The "towers" in the city of Jerusalem are indicators of the shelter and strength-of-protection that we have as children of God. And God reminds us in an authoritative way (Go, inspect the city...) of His presence and the security that He provides. We are sheltered by God!
Close your eyes and enter into the word-picture that Psalm 48 creates of God's protection over us: Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations (Psalm 48:13). God is our shelter--we can trust Him to be a fortified wall and citadel around us and for us. God shelters, protects and guards us against life bombardments.
And on the other side of the storm and God's sheltering of us through it, is our testimony about Him.
And for our sake and for His glory--He wants us to realize and tell of it. Take note...that you may describe them to future generations (Psalm 48:13).
The strong walls and indestructible fortresses--that is what God is like (Psalm 48:14). He will stand in protection over us, and He is doing so today. And He will do so for all of our tomorrows: He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. ~Psalm 48:12-14
The storms come, armies pursue, and life's battles threaten our spiritual strongholds. But our shelter is True. Our protection is fortified. Our God is a wall around us forever and ever.

Today, let's take note.
