You and I know most of the "big names" of Godly women in the Bible who did great things in the name of God, such as: Mary, Esther, Ruth, Rachel, Hannah, and of course Eve.

But there are lesser-named Bible women who also served the Lord in strong ways, however we don't hear about them as much (or in the case of today's scripture, you've probably never heard of these women).  But that doesn't minimize their boldness, their faith and the voice that they had in serving the Lord and making-their-mark in doing what was right.

There are certain names that come to mind of famous women in more recent times: Mother Teresa, Helen Keller, Rosa Parks and Amelia Earhart to name a few.

Watch for the underdog spirit that is espoused in Numbers 27 and be reminded that you and me may be lesser-known names, but we can absolutely have an impact for God in our own lives, and in the lives of others.

As the Israelites got closer to actually entering the Promised Land, God said to Moses “Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list.  (Numbers 26:53).

And so they did.

But there were some sisters (whose names you haven't heard of) who had no brother to claim a portion of land for their family name.  But that didn't mean that they were not intelligent, organized and entitled to a piece of land in their family's name.  The girls collected their thoughts, their speech and their hearts and they presented their case.

One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph. (2) These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle.  (3) “Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the Lord; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons. (4) Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”

(5) So Moses brought their case before the Lord. (6) And the Lord replied to Moses, (7) “The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.

(8) “And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters. (9) And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers. (10) If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. (11) But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the Lord commanded Moses.”  ~Numbers 27:1-11

We (most likely) haven't heard of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah before, but that doesn't make their efforts any less awesome.

These girls had good heads on their shoulders, wise minds and educated speech.  They wanted a future for their family name and to claim a piece in the inheritance that was being divided among God's people.  You go, girls!

And don't forget to notice (verses 8-11) that their (non-famous and unknown) voices blessed those that would come after them, because these sisters were bold enough to step out in unity (but still alone), and they presented a case grounded in logic and legitimacy.  Their idea and correct-reasoning caused a new legal requirement for the people of Israel (Numbers 27:11) that would bless other families without sons to inherit the land.

Feel empowered?  We should!

None of us are famous people with well-recognized names, but that does not negate or minimize anything we do for the Lord.  Just like Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah God has plans for us today, and causes for us to support in His name.

I'm not sure what yours is, but you know, don't you?

Let's consider Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah as our big (spiritual) sisters encouraging us and showing us that a lesser-known-name shouldn't minimize our boldness, our faith, and the voice that we can have in serving the Lord and making-our-mark in doing what is right.

We (most likely) hadn't heard of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah before, and most people outside of our social- and family-circles haven't heard of us before, but that doesn't make our efforts in God's name any less awesome.

Blessings,

sarah
