Some passages in the Bible can be brand new and obscure to us, and others are like old friends that we have grown up with since we were children. But even if we are familiar with a Biblical teaching, it doesn't mean that it can't speak freshly to our hearts when we are reacquainted with it.

Today let's be re-introduced to the fisherman and their amazing catch.

Lord, open our eyes and hearts. Fill our nets with a fresh-catch of Your vision for our lives today. Amen.

One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. (2) He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. (3) Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. ~Luke 5:1-3

Jesus was ingenuitive. The crowds were massive and growing, but He "noticed" an unorthodox way to serve them. Jesus, You see the relationships, situations and opportunities that surround us today. When we feel life "pressing in" on us, help us to "notice" new things and alternative ways to serve You and serve others. (4) When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” ~Luke 5:4

God, You are good and You are all-knowing. Push us out of our shallow faith and give us the boldness to go deeper for You, for Your purposes, and for Your glory. (5) “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” ~Luke 5:5

You are our Master. Let us never grow complacent and forget that we have been saved and forgiven by You. Lord, refresh our vibrancy for living our lives in service to You. And even though our pride struts with false-authority, You know best. We come in fresh submission to You and Your plans for us today. If you say so, Lord.

(6) And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! (7) A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. ~Luke 5:6-7

What if we submitted to Your authority over our lives? What blessings would fill our nets?

And when good things come, open our eyes to see their direct correlation to You. Those fishermen tried all night on their own, and reaped nothing. Some of us have been casting our nets for years without catch(ing) a thing.

If you say so, Lord.

And when the blessing comes, the credit is undeniably Yours. Anything in our nets has come from You, Lord.

(8) When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” (9) For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. (10) His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. ~Luke 5:8-10

Jesus, the realization of our imperfection, inferiority, and unworthiness before You is staggering. Bring a fresh awareness to us today and let it propel us in our gratitude for Your acceptance of us, even though we don't deserve You. Let us be awestruck all over again: You chose us. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” (11) And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. ~Luke 5:10-11

Lord, the call that You placed on Simon's life is the same command You speak over us today. We pledge to push-out and away from the comfort of ourselves and to trust in You to tell us where to drop our nets. When we allow You to take us deeper, the "catch" will be greater and more significant than we can handle ourselves. And it will be undeniably You. We will need others to help us reap it and that is Your plan. Working together, helping one-another, and ever "fishing" for others to join us in seeking You.

If you say so, Lord.

Lord, open our eyes and hearts. Fill our nets with a fresh-catch of Your vision for our lives today. Amen.

Blessings,

sarah
