As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. (39) She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. (40) But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

(41) “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, (42) but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”  ~Luke 10:38-42

Well, Jesus isn't coming to stay at my house, but we do have some family coming into town and I can't wait!  Sibling/cousin bonding, reminiscing, laughter, memories and fun all rolled up into a few days while they are in-state.

"Family" is the "big picture" and the main point, but the "little picture", or should I say the little details and preparations were beginning to crowd out the main point for me.

(Can you relate?)

The itinerary--What will we do when they are here?  Our normal life is a bit boring, so I need to nail down/figure out/create! our "itinerary".

The menu--What will we eat when they are here?  What can I make/freeze/prep/plan so that we can enjoy one another without the work of too many meals and the time it takes to make them for a crowd?

The laundry--What will they sleep on/in when they are here?  I have blankets and bedding to be washed for a fresh nights sleep after our wild and fun days!

The cleanse--What will they peek at when they are here?  I have to clean my closets, tidy the kids rooms and organize my life before the guests arrive.

Does anyone else think-this-way/do-this-to-themselves before company or an event arrives?  It's so distracting!

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.  ~Luke 10:40

I feel you, Martha.

But just as I am beginning to get overwhelmed and stressed, God plops these verses in my lap.  Don't 'ya just love God's word and timing?  It's relevant every-single-day in every-single-way, and the way that He "gets inside our minds and hearts" is uncanny.  Because He knows us.  And His word settles us and refocuses us---not on the planning and cleaning and prepping, but on what really deserves our attention: Him.

...“you are worried and upset about many things...  ~Luke 10:41

Why am I worried and distracted by so many things?  The loved ones coming to our house are coming for us.  To make new memories and relive old ones, and they are not coming to judge our home-organization or lack thereof.  (Who would be coming for that reason?)

Lord, thank you for awakening me to the pompousness of my superficial concerns.  Why do we let worldly cares creep into our hearts and attitudes?  You recenter us and remind us of what is needed: You.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, (42) but few things are needed—or indeed only one. ~Luke 10:41-42

Only one.

Any guesses on what one thing Jesus meant?

Mary...who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  ~Luke 10:39

What is the one thing that is important for us to do today?  To sit at the Lord’s feet listening...

What one thing will center our thoughts, our hearts and our plans for the day?  To sit at the Lord’s feet listening...

What is the one thing that will de-stress us, unclutter us and set us free today?  To sit at the Lord’s feet listening...

And wouldn't you know it...when I stopped scurrying and ceased planning...When I got quiet and sat still at the Lord’s feet listening...this "Martha" realized what Mary had known all along...

Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”  ~Luke 10:42

As I read these verses and felt their immediate application to me/my franticness/my control-issues/and perfection-tendencies: I also felt God's freedom as He drew open my curtains and exposed the false-gods I was bowing before.

Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”  ~Luke 10:42

We want to choose what is better today also, Lord.  We choose You.

Jesus, would you please ready our hearts and minds today with what is important: YOU.  Sitting at Your feet is all the preparedness we need to get ready for the day, the company, the event, and for our lives.  Only one thing is needed: You.

Blessings,

sarah
