Feeling heavy? Going to bed with that weight on your shoulders and waking up to it also?
Maybe it's grief: the loss of someone, or the death of a dream, or the dwindling of hope.
Maybe it's fear: not of the unknown but of the known. Reality is not what you want it to be.
Maybe it's being "stuck". You can't find the "old you" who rolled-with-the-punches and made the best of things. Instead you feel continually punched and you can't find anything to make the best of.
Or maybe it's just a new day and the perfect time to tune in to God.
Shouting in desperation or barely audible in spiritual-exhaustion: He hears our prayer.
Psalm 86
A prayer of David.
1 Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.
2 Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God.
3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly.
4 Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you.
5 O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
6 Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry.
7 I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.
8 No pagan god is like you, O Lord. None can do what you do!
9 All the nations you made will come and bow before you, Lord; they will praise your holy name.
10 For you are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God.
11 Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.
12 With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever,
13 for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death.
14 O God, insolent people rise up against me; a violent gang is trying to kill me. You mean nothing to them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
16 Look down and have mercy on me. Give your strength to your servant; save me, the son of your servant.
17 Send me a sign of your favor. Then those who hate me will be put to shame, for you, O Lord, help and comfort me. ~Psalm 86:1-17
It's all here. Our plea for God to hear and see us in our circumstances, (which He does): Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. (Psalm 86:1)
And our humble, honest, and raw requests for the Lord to Protect me...Save me...Be merciful to me...Give me happiness...Listen closely to my prayer...hear my urgent cry...Teach me your ways...Grant me purity of heart...Look down and have mercy on me. Give your strength to your servant; save me...Send me a sign of your favor... (Psalm 86:2-4, 6, 11, 16-17).
And even in our vulnerability and under the weight of today's strain, the Truth of Who God is, and our steadfast reliance on Him runs deeply through us. Sometimes we may be almost too heavy to draw our faith-roots to the surface, but David's prayer does it for us today. Rededicate yourself to God:
I serve you and trust you...I am calling on you constantly...I give myself to you...I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me...None can do what you do!...For you are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God...With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever... (Psalm 86:2-4, 7-8, 10, 12).
We give You glory today, Lord. We give you the heaviness on minds and in our hearts and we pledge Your dominion over all of it today. We lay our burdens down at Your feet. In love You trample over our troubles and remind us of Your strength and power over our days, our eternity, and our thoughts today. Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. Amen.
Blessings,
sarah
