Don't worry if we don't feel worthy of serving God today. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them (I Samuel 16:7).

We're too uneducated in the Bible? Too shy? Too short? Too tall? Too quiet? Too loud? Too sinful?

All of those things might be hurdles for us. But not for God.

“Don’t judge by...appearance or height...The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” ~I Samuel 16:7

And where are we/what are we doing as we wait upon the Lord for His direction in our lives? Are we paralyzed in the anxiety of what's next for us? Are we idle in the interim?

We needn't be and we better not be. The Lord has given us gifts, passions, pastimes, careers and ministries to serve Him in as we live daily life. As we do the work of life, God will reveal what work of His is next for us to do.

And we won't miss Him. When God sends for us, He will locate us right where we are at.

So...where are we at today?

David was out in the fields watching the sheep and goats (I Samuel 16:11) when Samuel, a man of God came to his dad (Jesse's) house, to find him. David was not the oldest son (he was the youngest of eight brothers!), and nor was he the most experienced/strongest/or well-learned, but David was doing what he was supposed to be doing for his dad, for his family, for himself, and ultimately for his God. And when he was in the midst of those duties is when God called him.

It's when He will call upon us for our next "assignment" too. Keep doing the work of life (God's way) and God's next anointing (direction/instruction/delegation) will come.

~~~~~~
(6) When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab (David's oldest brother) and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”
(7) But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
(8) Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the Lord has chosen.” (9) Next Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the Lord has chosen.” (10) In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” (11) Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”
“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
(12) So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.”
(13) So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. ~I Samuel 16:6-13
It's exciting, isn't it? God does not (only) choose the oldest, the tallest, the fairest, the most-degreed, the richest, the elite...
He might choose an individual with one (or more) of those qualifications, and indeed He has before. But on this Scriptural occasion and many others...and today--He is also seeking to anoint us.
The least within a family, the last in line, the lesser prepared, the imperfectly-educated-in-His Word, the underdog. Today He is waiting for us to "come in from our fields" where we've been watching over the "sheep and goats" He's given us.
He's waiting. For us.
If we didn't know that God has a call on our lives, and that He has sent for us...He has.
And He will not "sit down to eat" until we arrive. (I Samuel 16:11).
So arrive.
Answer the Lord's call today. He called David, a shepherd, out of the fields to be a king and to live publicly and influence others for His great name and glory. God is calling us out of our "fields" today to do the same. There are situations/opportunities/people/and lost sheep that need a "King" and we have been commissioned by God to live publicly for Him and to have an influence for His glory and renown.
Don't feel qualified?
Me neither.
But God has chosen us, just as He chose David. (...for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.  ~Deuteronomy 14:2)
...And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him." ~I Samuel 16:12
So don't worry if we don't feel qualified to serve the Lord. We're not. But He is qualified to select us, and that is all that matters.
But the Lord said...“Don’t judge by his appearance or height...The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” ~I Samuel 16:7
Lord, may you look at our hearts and see willingness today. May you sense a readiness in our spirit to serve you and may our lack-of-qualification fuel our humility and servant-leadership in the presence of others. Don't judge us by our appearance, height, or outward appearance, Lord, and don't reject us. Look at our hearts, Lord, and anoint us. Today we answer Your call and pray for Your Spirit to come powerfully upon us. Amen.
Blessings,
sarah
