And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. (9) An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. (10) But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. (11) Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord…
(13) Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
(14) “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
(14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
(15) When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
(16)So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. (17) When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, (18) and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. ~Luke 2:8-11, 13-18
There is a baby on the way...
Born this very night.
The shepherds were the first to know, but the Message and the Miracle they received were for all of us.
Is for all of us. (She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. ~Matthew 1:21).
Think about "receiving" a newborn baby and taking it into our arms. Something so precious and fragile demands our full attention and care. There can be no haphazardness or sudden-moves, but rather extreme gentleness, coupled with tenderness and caution.
The babe born that first Christmas still reaches out to us today, but He is no child. He "came" as an infant, but was then...and is now, the King of all Kings and Creator of the World.
"Receiving" Jesus should be something we do (daily) with care and priority, but we grow careless with His message and take His Salvation for granted.
Gracious Jesus, born in that manger so long ago, let us be expectant for You today. Let us seek You. Allow us to find You. May we receive You and Your Word and Your direction over our lives as one receives a baby: gently, tenderly, humbly, lovingly, carefully.
May the excitement of the hope, peace and goodwill toward men that You bring excite our spirit today and humble us too.
Halt our attitude and carelessness concerning You/the miracle of Your birth/and Who You are.
Stop our "touch" (time dedicated to being with You) from being brusque, hurried, timed, cold, forced, contrived, obligatory and manipulative. All of these things limit US, but not You.
Today as we prepare to receive You and the idea/hope/salvation of You (all over again), break down the walls that separate us from You. You broke that barrier on the first Christmas and the only thing standing between us and a tender, intimate, nurturing relationship with You today...is us.
Lord, thank You for Your message of hope born this very night so long ago.
Foretold by prophets from days of old.
Location disclosed by a star in the Heavens.
Followed by wise and learned men.
Announced by a multitude of angels.
Welcomed immediately by everyday people (shepherds) like you and me.
Changing lives at even the first encounter...
The "announcement" of Your birth can be a spiritual re-birth for us with You today.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord… Luke 2:11)
