The people who owned our house before us left a big broom-handled squeegee hanging on the wall in the garage. Like something you might use to clean windows, but with a long handle and it's for floors. I had never seen one before, but I thought it was very kind of them and that it looked like a nice house-tool to have "just in case".

The first winter in our home I realized exactly why the squeegee hung ready in the garage.

Our garage floor has a central drain, but it must not have had a level base when they poured the concrete floor, and so any slush or snow melting off a parked car settles and spreads throughout the garage. You need a squeegee to push the water out.

Or, as was the case this morning: if a water pipe freezes on the back wall of your garage in the negative-2 degree freezing temperatures of Northeast Ohio and causes a pipe to burst and you step out into an inch of water covering your garage floor....You need a squeegee to push the water out.

I've never been so thankful for the squeegee tool that our previous homeowners left.

As I pushed little lakes of water out of our garage and into our driveway with the squeegee this morning, I couldn't help but see a parallel into our lives and God's Word.

The waters of life soak us. Sometimes it's through a slow, relentless drip: the chronic pain/the lack of diagnosis/the perpetuated fear and misinformation/a wayward family member.

Sometimes it's a rush of water: a "pipe breaks" and we wake up to Cancer/the death of a loved one/job loss/an emotional/spiritual/physical blow...and it comes on so quick that we're almost sucked under.

The waters of life come...there's no question about that. But what is our foundation like?

My garage floor is unlevel and not built on solid ground, and so we have complications when the waters come in there.

How about us? The Bible is God's how-to manual and a tool-of-Truth that He has provided for our sunny days and for the days when our pipes burst, and for every day in between. His Word is our solid foundation.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (25) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. (26) But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. (27) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”  ~Matthew 7:24-27

The Bible is our foundation, and it's also our "squeegee". Whatever our mood, situation, question or prayer, the Bible is relevant. The Bible meets us exactly where we are at. The Bible speaks God's direction into our life. Just open it.

For the word of God is alive and active.  ~Hebrews 4:12

As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.  ~Psalm 18:30

...but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  ~Isaiah 40:31

When the slow drips of life are driving us over the edge, or when the sudden gush pulls us under, God's Word provides hope, a light at the end of the tunnel, and peace.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. ~Psalm 119:105

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. ~Isaiah 26:3

The Bible is a tool that is available to us anytime we take a moment to pick it up, and it is a tool to push back the flood waters that dampen our spirits, threaten to quench our flames, and sometimes even cause us to feel like we could drown.

The value of God's Word cannot be underestimated in providing truth, direction, clarity, and peace to us, on 'picture-perfect' days, and on the mornings when we wake up to standing water because our pipes have burst.

He's given us His Word and His Son as tools to bail us out spiritually when the floods and puddles of life seem to overtake us.

The Bible is not something God gave us "just to be nice" or as a once-in-a-while tool to keep on a shelf "just in case".

We have to grab a hold of that squeegee-of-God's-Word daily to push back the waters of this world. They seep in and dampen our resolve, wet our fire for Him, and threaten to drown us some times. But the word of God is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12), and thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105).
