Kneel, bow your head, and prepare to serve our King, because we have been dubbed worthy by Him, and He sends us.

Have you ever read a medieval book or watched a show describing a "knighting" ceremony? Picture a young knight kneeling and bowing his head before a king or someone in authority who speaks over him and into him about the courage and strength that will be required for the challenges before him. The king touches one shoulder and then the other with a sword and then proclaims royalty, bravery, purpose, protection and victory over the young protege and his calling to service. He is then dubbed "ready" for service and action.

Covered in blessing, but also pronounced into active service is how we can feel when reading John 17.

Like a knighting ceremony, Jesus' words to His disciples (and to us) are powerful and bold, and like a hopeful warrior preparing to become a knight, today may we experience the honor, excitement and "sending" as we listen to Jesus pray over us.

We might want to kneel, bow our head, and prepare to serve our King, because we have been dubbed worthy by Him, and He sends us.

My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. (10) All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. (11) ...now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

(13) ...I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. (14) I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. (15) I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. (16) They do not belong to this world any more than I do. (17) Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. (18) Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. (19) And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.

(20) “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. ~John 17:9-11, 13-20

These prayers spoken by Jesus to His disciples and us (I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message... ~John 17:20) gird our spiritual loins for doing battle with the world today! He has dubbed us "His", and we are!

First of all, can we come back to the fact that Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, prays for us? Little old me and you. And even though He knows everything(!) about us and what we've done and what we still do/think/say...Jesus prays to God for us ("those you have given me") because we belong to God (because they belong to you). And more than that, He loves us enough to pray for our protection in this world, so that we will be united just as Jesus is in union with His Father.

Jesus is praying big stuff over us today!

And in His prayer, He confirms His supreme omniscience over us by verbalizing the exact people/hurdles/cultural trends/attitudes (of the world) that we will do battle with today:

And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world...(16) They do not belong to this world any more than I do... ~John 17:14, 16

But in His powerful love and His call-of-service on our lives today, notice that Jesus doesn't wish-away the world, shelter us from the world, or tell us to step aside/hide away from the world. He prays to His Father in quite the opposite way for us:

I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.

(17) Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. (18) Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. ~John 17:15, 17

Jesus dubs us into royal service for Him today.

I picture us kneeling and bowing our heads before Him. These verses speak over us and into us revealing that we belong to God the Father and His Son, Jesus.

Jesus prays for us, instilling the courage and strength that will be required of us, and He asks for our protection ("protect them by the power of your name" ~John 17:11) so that (we) will be united with other Believers just as Jesus is united with His Father.

It's powerful stuff!

We might not feel an actual "touch" on one shoulder and then the other, but may we feel "touched" by the authority of God Jesus today as they proclaim royalty, bravery, purpose, protection, and victory over us and our call to service in their Name today. Consider yourself "dubbed".

Covered in the blessing of Jesus, but also pronounced into active service for Him is how we can feel today.

Kneel, bow your head, and prepare to serve our King, because we have been dubbed worthy by Him, and He sends us.

Blessings,

Sarah
