What was your favorite subject/activity in school? Gym? Student Council president? History? Typing? Religion? Or just being one of the crowd?
God's got a place for you in service to Him today.
Each of us have different tendencies, preferences, comfort-levels, or--as the Bible would put it: "gifts", and our job is to step up or fall-in-line and join His ranks as we have been equipped.
I was reminded of this as I read about some of the men serving King David. "All the king's men" each had different jobs and they were each valuable to the king in different ways. The same is true for us today as we serve the Lord.
Now Joab was the commander of the army of Israel. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard. (24) Adoniram was in charge of forced labor. Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the royal historian. (25) Sheva was the court secretary. Zadok and Abiathar were the priests. (26) And Ira, a descendant of Jair, was David’s personal priest. ~2 Samuel 20:23-26
Are you organized, focused, calm-under-pressure, brave and obedient? Joab was the commander of the army of Israel (2 Samuel 20:23). God needs you in his service today.
Can you lead, encourage, motivate and discipline others? Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard (2 Samuel 20:23).
Do you enjoy teamwork, working toward a common goal, and do you see the importance, purpose, and necessity in a job well-done, even if it is a repetitive or menial job? Adoniram was in charge of forced labor (2 Samuel 20:24).
Were you a History or English major and everyone said you'd never find a job? Graduate of a Liberal Arts college or fascinated by writing and events of the past? Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the royal historian (2 Samuel 20:24).
Do you have a strong attention to detail, great listening skills and enjoy planning events because you "cover every detail"? Sheva was the court secretary (2 Samuel 20:25).
Are you fascinated by God's Word and can't keep the hope, wisdom and encouragement of it to yourself? Zadok and Abiathar were the priests (2 Samuel 20:25).
Are you building into someone? Mentoring or discipling someone that God has placed in your path and heart? And Ira, a descendant of Jair, was David’s personal priest. (2 Samuel 20:26).
We are each different and we all have different strengths...and God has a place for each of us on His team. We just have to figure out what our "position" is, and use that to glorify Him.
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. (12) Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. ~Ephesians 4:11-12
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. (8 )To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. (9) The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. (10) He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. (11) It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
(12) The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. ~I Corinthians 12:7-12
So it is with the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:7-12), and so it is with us--the family of Christ. There are many parts and people, and personality types...and everyone has an important role.
What's yours?
What was your favorite subject/activity in school? What do you like to do? Who do you feel good helping? What areas has God given you comfort, influence or favor in?
Just like Joab, Benaiah, Adoniram, Jehoshaphat, Sheva, Zadok , Abiathar, And Ira (2 Samuel 20:23-26), God's got a place for us in service to Him today.
Blessings,
sarah
