I was in a fix.  A pinch.  A pickle.

I had the way, but I needed help with the means.  I needed a big, strong person's help, and time was ticking.

We have a big van that can seat many kids (and often does), but it was in the shop.  We have a bigger van that can seat even more kids...but the bench-seats were not in it.

I needed a big, strong person to help me load the heavy benches into the van, and the first couple people I asked couldn't/didn't show up.

And time was ticking.

The purpose of getting the benches in the van was to take home the six kids I had already (happily/willingly/for-the-love-of-Jesus!) volunteered to drive home after Bible study, and I needed to leave to get them in fifteen minutes

It used to be hours from now, then it was only an hour from now, and now it was about now that I had to leave...and no benches were in the van because I had not yet found a big, strong person.

And time was ticking.

I was at work and becoming desperate, so I walked across the street and into an office of another company that I had never been to, looking for a big, strong person.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outside of a person. But the Lord looks at what is in the heart.”  ~I Samuel 16:7

I did not find a big, strong person, I found two women, both smaller than me.  They peeped their heads kindly out of their offices and listened as I asked if they might have "someone available" (I was thinking, 'big and strong') to help lift some heavy benches into a van.

They did not have anyone else available, but immediately, willingly, and authentically--they both offered themselves.

"Give to those who ask, and don’t refuse those who wish to borrow from you."  ~Matthew 5:42

I had entered these ladies' workplace unannounced, I had never met these two women before, I asked them to help me with heavy lifting, and I (apologetically) told them it had to be now because time was ticking and it was almost "pick-up" time for the students.

They did not bat an eye before whole-heartedly saying, "Yes".

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.  ~Hebrews 13:16

~~~
These two ladies and I (and Jesus) made light work of the heavy benches.
I was wrong: I did not need a big, strong person.
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”  ~Mark 10:27
I needed willing persons.  I needed hard-working persons.  And God provided both.
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.  Learn from their ways and become wise!  (7) Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, (8) they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.  ~Proverbs 6:6-8
The benches got in and they got in within perfect timing.  Not because of people with big muscles but because of people with big and willing hearts.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.  ~Romans 12:13
Lord, forgive us when we try to formulate a solution without inviting You into our equation.  Father, have mercy on our logical-view of life, and open our eyes to the unconventional methods that you place right in front of us.  Lord, thank You for the reminder that we do not need to be equipped to serve You...but rather, that You will equip us to serve You...if we will only be willing.  Amen.
Today, may we offer ourselves immediately, willingly, and authentically to whatever and whoever God places in our path, and may we be on the lookout for God's solution to our issues, instead of our own.
And if we are in a fix, a pinch, or a pickle today: We might not be the biggest, we might not be the strongest...but we do not need to be.  God is.
He is the way, (Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  ~John 14:6), and He will provide the means.
Blessings,
sarah
