Sometimes I prepare meals or baked goods in advance and freeze them.  Sealed and stacked in the depths of our freezer, they are a gift that I give myself on a future day.  The saved time, work, prep and thought is wise and it’s a way that I love myself.

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.  ~Proverbs 19:8

We have three kids and anytime that they choose to study ahead of time for a test, anytime they proactively begin an assignment--instead of waiting until the last minute, or anytime that they finish a paper early…it’s wise, and a way that they love themselves

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.  ~Proverbs 19:8

I’m not sure I would have equated acquiring wisdom with loving myself, but it makes so much sense.

When we cherish understanding, or learn from our experiences, mistakes, triumphs and failures…we acquire wisdom, and it's a gift we give ourselves

The Bible has a lot to say about wisdom and gaining it.  It turns out...we are not "on our own" when it comes to learning how to be wise.  God's Word instructs us in many ways to gain wisdom, and doing so is to love oneself.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.  ~James 3:13

Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?  ~Job 12:12

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.  Proverbs 11:2

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!  ~Proverbs 16:16

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.   ~Proverbs 17:28

Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.  ~Proverbs 13:10

Saving for a rainy day, knowing when to speak and when not to, and learning from our mistakes are all examples of wisdom, and are ways that we can love ourselves if we choose to.

And the simplest, most direct way to acquire wisdomJust ask.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God...and it will be given to you.  ~James 1:5

Lord, here we are asking for Your wisdom today.  Our earthly wisdom may bring a pre-made meal or a less-stressful exam, but the wisdom You provide will change our trajectory, our decisions and our potential in-Your-service.  Acquiring YOUR wisdom is to love ourselves, Lord.  There is no better gift that we could give ourselves.  Teach us Your ways today, Father and we will cherish the understanding.  Amen.

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.  ~Proverbs 19:8
