I found something long-lost today.

Many don't even know that it's been missing.  But it's been buried.  Cast aside long ago and untouched for many years.  Forgotten.

Purposely neglected or accidentally pushed-aside---either way, we find it afresh today: God's Word/The Bible/the Book of the Law.

While they were bringing out the money collected at the Lord’s Temple, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that was written by Moses. (15) Hilkiah said to Shaphan the court secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the Lord’s Temple!” Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan.  ~2 Chronicles 34:14-15

The Book of the Law of the Lord that was written by Moses had been long-lost by the Israelites (God's people).  It had been buried in the bowels of the Temple, cast aside long ago and untouched for many years.  Forgotten.  Purposely neglected by many kings.

The king during this time period in the Bible was Josiah.  So when Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord...he gave it to Shaphan the court secretary....and Shapan took the scroll to the king (Josiah).

(18) Shaphan...told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” So Shaphan read it to the king.

(19) When the king heard what was written in the Law, he tore his clothes in despair. (20) Then he gave these orders.. (21) “Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for all the remnant of Israel and Judah. Inquire about the words written in the scroll that has been found. For the Lord’s great anger has been poured out on us because our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the Lord. We have not been doing everything this scroll says we must do.”   ~2 Chronicles 34:18-21

Are we as individuals and as a Nation obeying the word of the Lord?

Are we as individuals and as a Nation doing everything (the Bible) says we must do?

Do we think there will be no consequence for this or for our allowance of this?

Josiah was right to tear his clothes in despair (2 Chronicles 34:19) because we cannot abandon the Word of the Lord and expect no repercussion.

So...the other men went...to consult with the prophet...  (23) She said to them, “The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken! Go back and tell the man who sent you, (24) ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster on this city and its people. All the curses written in the scroll that was read to the king of Judah will come true.

(25) For my people have abandoned me and offered sacrifices to pagan gods, and I am very angry with them for everything they have done. My anger will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.’  ~2 Chronicles 34:22-25

What in the world can we do with a consequence-sentence like that?

Repent.  And return to God and His Word/the Book of the Law.

God always hears us and sees our heart when we seek Him in repentance.

Do we wonder if the Lord will hear our prayers of repentance as a Nation?  Find the Book of the Law of the Lord (the Bible) and read it!

  • If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  ~2 Chronicles 7:14

Do we wonder when "life" begins?  Have we chosen to euphemize murder?  Find the Book of the Law of the Lord (the Bible) and read it!

  • For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.  (16) Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.  ~Psalm 139:13-16

Are we confused, misled, or creating confusion by creating our own truths?  Find the Book of the Law of the Lord (the Bible) and read it!

  • So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  ~Genesis 1:27

Do we wonder if the God of the universe can possibly care enough about us to hear our prayers? Find the Book of the Law of the Lord (the Bible) and read it!

  • See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know Him.  ~1 John 3:1

The Lord, the God of Israel hears us indeed.

~~~
“But go to the king of Judah who sent you to seek the Lord and tell him: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the message you have just heard: (27) You were sorry and humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this city and its people. You humbled yourself and tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord....’”  ~2 Chronicles 34:26-27
Return to God's Word today!  Find the Bible on your shelf.  Open it.
We must find God's Word and Law.  It's buried deep in the rabble and rubble of our society today.  But God can rebuild His people and our Nation if we will return to His Word and His Ways instead of creating our own truths.
God is summoning us back to His Law today.  Read it!  It will wreck us and then change us to become more like Him.  The Bible will change the course of our lives and then every life that we touch in His Name.  That is what the Bible has always done for those who will choose to read it.
Purposely neglected or accidentally pushed-aside---either way, may we find it afresh today: God's Word/The Bible/the Book of the Law.
Blessings,
sarah
