I've been to a few historical forts over the years, including: Fort Macon (Emerald Isle, NC), Castillo de San Marcos (St. Augustine Florida), Fremantle Fortress (Fremantle, Western Australia), Castillo San Filipe de Morro (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

Maybe you have too.

They are all surrounded by walls/gates/barriers/towers and citadels of some sort or another, and these protective entities are strong, fortified, built-to-last and to endure.  They are constructed for protection and just looking at these walls and towers---you can see and experience their strength.

When you go inside the fortified walls of these places, you feel protected.  Watched over.  Proactively secure.  Safe...even in the midst of crossfire or attack.

Psalm 48 tells us to (not only) consider the fortification, but to Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem.  Walk around and count the many towers.  (13) Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.  ~Psalm 48:12-13

Inspect the ways that Jerusalem is protected, it says.  Check it out...walk aroundNotice the strength and fortitude of the structures that have been put in place to protect this city.   Count the many towers.  Tour (walk around, take note, observe and absorb) all the citadels.

There is volume and multitude to the towers, walls and citadels, or else the Psalmist would not ask us to take note of how many there are: "count the many towers", "take note of the fortified walls""tour all the citadels".

Repeatedly, the Psalmist assesses the multiplied mediums of strength surrounding Jerusalem (walls, towers, citadels), and they also repeatedly speak of the protective strength of Jerusalem.

Fortified.  Strong.  Tall.  Stoic.  Thick.  Protective.  Keeping-us-safe.  Separating-us-from-the-enemy.

Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem.  Walk around and count the many towers.  (13) Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.   ~Psalm 48:12-13

Go, and inspect, the Psalmist tells us.  Go and understand the outward strength and protection that is established in this city of Jerusalem.

Why?

For that is what God is like.  He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.  ~Psalm 48:14

~~~
All of the descriptions and examples of Jerusalem's towers, fortified walls and citadels...that is what God is like (to us, His children).
Fortified.  Strong.  Tall.  Stoic.  Thick.  Protective.  Keeping-us-safe.  Separating-us-from-the-enemy.
    Go, inspect God.
    Walk around and count His many towers.
    Take note of His fortified walls, and tour all His citadels, that you may describe them to future     generations.
    For that is what God is like.  He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.
~~~

Why would God describe and use towers, walls, and citadels as examples to us?  Because that is what God is like.

And when we tour actual forts and citadels, we can catch a glimpse or gain a feel for the comparison that God is making in Psalm 48.    For that is what God is like (Psalm 48:14).

Fortified.  Strong.  Tall.  Stoic.  Thick.  Protective.  Keeping-us-safe.  Separating-us-from-the-enemy.  That is what God is like (Psalm 48:14).

~~~
How long can we trust Him to protect us?  Forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die (Psalm 48:14).
~~~

Relax in the protection of our Lord today.  He's got us surrounded.  His many towers keep watch for us.  His fortified walls protect and shield us.  His citadels are strong and unwavering, even when the enemy attacks.

Blessings,

sarah
