Have you ever read the riddles that begin: "You know you're old when...", and then you proceed through the questions to see how many strike-a-chord or "ring true" for you?

That's what I thought of (sort of) in reading the Bible today.  God encourages us to make-the-most of our youth (however long we can hold on to it), and He also warns us to remember Him now so that we will also have a memory (and testimony!) of Him later when we are older.

Check your age!  See how many of these  you know you're old when" Bible verses strike-a-chord or "ring true" for you today:

Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.”

(2) Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky.

(3) Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble;

and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop.

Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding;

and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly.

(4) Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades.

Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.

(5) Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets;

before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom,

and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper,

and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire.

Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

(6) Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken.

Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well.

(7) For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.    ~Ecclesiastes 12:1-7

~~~
What is our "age" today?  Are we in the excitement of youth?  Then remember God, and Honor him in your youth (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
Or are we beyond the days of virility and we're shuffling into a more relaxed pace and stage?
And maybe "relaxed" is not a truthful description, and deteriorating is more accurate.  But even so, God was with us when we were young and He is with us when we are older.
Are our eyes dim?  Our legs trembling?  Our shoulders stooping?  Our teeth grinding?  Our shoulders stooping?  Our teeth grinding?
Have we become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets?
Has our hair turned white like an almond tree in bloom (if anyone knew our real color)?
Are we dragging along without energy like a dying grasshopper today?
If we "know we're old" because most of these statements strike-a-chord or "ring true" for us, remember God (Him) today.  He is the God of our yesterday (youth!), He is the God of our today, and he will always, always be the God of our tomorrow.  (Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  ~Hebrews 13:8).
We know we're old when Jesus is the Lord of our hearts.
Blessings,
sarah
