The age-old question asked today (Halloween) is, "Who are we going to be?"... "Who are we dressing-up as?"..."What will our costume be?"..."Who will we imitate?"

And why?

Today's verses give us the Biblical answer--not only in who we should imitate, but also to how we should live...and why.

No tricks, just the verse-by-verse treats of what a life lived imitating God should be and how we should dress-ourselves, inside and out.

Who should we be dressing-up as today? Who should we be imitating?

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. (2) Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

(3) Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.

(4) Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.

(5) You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

(6) Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.

(7) Don’t participate in the things these people do. (8) For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! (9) For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

(10) Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.

(11) Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

(12) It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. (13) But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, (14) for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,

(17) Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

(18) Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, (19) singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.

(20) And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  ~Ephesians 5:1-20

God gets specific about who we should "look like" today--Him.  (Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.  ~Ephesians 5:1).

And it's not-at-all that God is a fuddy-duddy when it comes to life.  The opposite is actually true: our Lord earnestly desires for each of us to live a full and abundant life (I have come so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.  ~John 10:10).

At first glance, these verses might seem like the house that is handing out boxes of raisins on Halloween night, but if we will dig deeper and seek-to-understand God's good plan for us, we'll see that God is actually giving away the full-size candy bars of life.

Our Heavenly Father knows what's best for His children, and He knows that worthless deeds of evil and darkness only lead to our mental/spiritual/physical/emotional demise, instead of building us up.

God's way is full of light, and no darkness.

Have we been "sleeping on the job" of living for Him?  Perhaps we have regressed or relaxed in our spiritual standards or commitments lately.  If our light has dimmed a bit:

“Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”  (15) So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. (16) Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  ~Ephesians 5:14-16

Let's wake up today!  And let's make the most of every opportunity today.  Imitate God today and be the Light today.

For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!  ~Ephesians 5:8

And when people ask, "Who are we going to be or imitate?" today...we know the Answer:

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. (2) Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us...  ~Ephesians 5:1-2

Live as people of light today!
