I worked a 16 hour shift the other day...my son worked 17 hours, and it was a blast!  We each did our own special work, we helped the other parts grow, so that the whole body was healthy and growing and full of love.

His show choir group hosted eleven other show choirs for a competition at our high school.  Our students were the greeters, stage-help (think risers and sets up-and-down for eleven groups), and room hosts (making sure guest schools have what they need and get to stage and rehearsal on time, while (men) dressed in a suit or (women) in a dress and heels).  They worked their tails off, with a smile all the while, all the live l-o-n-g day...and they each did their own special work, they helped the other parts grow, so that the whole body was healthy and growing and full of love.

Family volunteers did everything from pound parking signs into frozen ground prior to the event, to sell admission tickets, to make iced coffees, to "show, don't tell" in response to any questions asked by visitors, to stocking and staffing the judges room and directors lounge, to picking up 350 Dairy Queen Blizzards to sell, to working the cafeteria line and dishing out everything from macaroni and cheese (we sold out!), to lasagna, to orange chicken.

Some people wiped tables all day in keeping the common areas sanitized, while others managed money boxes and totals, kept hot pizzas being delivered all day for resale, while still others staffed a table for a hometown charity that hits way close to home (https://www.collincares.net/).

So many friends and family of show choir kids gave all day, and had a blast doing so.   They each did their own special work,  helping the other parts grow, so that the whole body was healthy and growing and full of love.

I was there to volunteer...but the school employees on the maintenance, cafeteria, and technical staff that were "working" did so with a such fervor and fun and efficiency, that it was inspiring.  Oh, that we would all love our work as much as these teams do!

There were a ton of jobs.  Each one, big or small, was integral to the success of the day.  We have all been in situations where someone doesn't pull their share of the load, or where attitudes infect the environment negatively, but when was the last time we were blessed to be a part of many different people doing many different things, but all for one common goal and with A+ effort?  It's a little bit of Heaven on earth, if you ask me.

And that's just what God has in mind for us.  That's how He wants us to come together, to live together, to work together, and to grow in every way more and more like Him together.

Then we will no longer be immature like children... (15) Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.

(16) He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.  ~Ephesians 4:14-16

~~~
It can be very difficult not to fall into the selfish pattern of the world and to be like immature children, making everything about us.  But if we will (Instead!) choose Christ, and His work-ethic, His attitude, His design for: many-of-us doing many-different-things, but acknowledging the strength of each person and part, and seeing the beauty of the whole body working together...
Then, as each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love (Ephesians 4:16).
When that is happening, it makes even a 16 or 17 hour shift...enjoyable!
Enjoy your shift today.
Blessings,
sarah
