Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. (2) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”  ~Mark 14:1-2

What is truth? (John 18:38)

Is truth hiding the procedures and obstructing the due-process of an innocent man (Son of Man)?  Is truth conducting il-legal processes under guise of "legal", and under the cover of (literal and figurative) darkness so that the public neither knows or can be informed of the (illegal) actions taking place?

  • The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!  ~Matthew 26:24
  • Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? (53) Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”  ~Luke 22:52
  • Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. (2) So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.  ~Matthew 27:1-2

What is truth? (John 18:38)

Pilate was seeking it.

Actually, Pilate knew what the truth was.

“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. (39) But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
(40) They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” ~John 18:38-40

Pilate knew the truth, but (like many before him and many since) he avoided the truth to "stay safe" and to fit in.  He ignored the truth under peer and public pressure.

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.  ~Mark 15:15

The truth hasn't changed in 2024 years.  In a world of lies and false truths, it's no wonder that we are drawn (year after year) and page after page to Your Truth, Lord.

It never changes.

You never change.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (9) Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines.   ~Hebrews 13:8-9

Jesus told the truth, and (some) people didn't want to hear it.

Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?  ~Mark 14:63

Some people still don't want to hear it.

What is truth? (John 18:38)

The truth is:

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. (28) They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, (29) and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. (30) They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. (31) After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.  ~Matthew 27:27-31

The (written over 700 years before it occured) truth is:

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.

(5) But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

(6) We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

(7) He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

(8) By oppression and judgment he was taken away.  Yet who of his generation protested?  For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.

(10) Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand...

(12)  ...For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.  ~Isaiah 53:4-8, 10, 12

What is truth? (John 18:38)

You.

You are Truth, Lord.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  ~John 14:6

What is truth? (John 18:38)

It is freedom.

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. (32) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  ~John 8:31-32

Know the truth today, and be freed by the sacrifice, love, and redemption that Jesus Christ died to provide.
