Corona Devo 1693
On the outside wall of our office building, there are some gaps in the mulch, which make little caverns of space at the base of the building. Looking into one such area the other day as I walked into work, I thought to myself, "Those crevices would be a perfect place to hideaway and chill out".
And peering closer into the dark crack, I saw that someone was hiding away and chilling out (resting). A big blackish-brown frog was laying in that mulch-cave. I saw his golden eyelid and then I saw his whole beady body...just sitting there, resting, and staring at me.
When I came back to work the next day, there sat the dark frog (still).
The mulch cavern was (finally) vacant on the third day, and I realized that the frog had (just) been there resting.
He did not go there to die...he went there to rest. He was not there for hibernation...he was just there to be still for a couple days.
And then he was gone. Back to his frog life. Back to his froggie-schedule and back to whatever routine frogs keep.
But seeing that frog sit still for three days reminded me: God provides rest.
~~~
Is it time for a rest for us today? And maybe tomorrow too?
We are not made to hop from one thing/activity/need/appointment/person to the next, like a frog in perpetual motion.
As I learned this week (by observation), God provides rest, and if He provides rest for frogs, He certainly provides rest for us. The Bible even tells us so:
And God will provide rest for you... ~2 Thessalonians 1:7
It's been a week...
It's been a quarter...
It's been a year...
It's been too long since we rested in Him.
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength... ~Isaiah 30:15
Let's step back today. Let's take a look around our surroundings and our heart today. Find a crevice that would be a perfect place to hideaway and chill out...and let's tuck ourselves away and meet God there.
Rest today.
We have a lot today, I know. A lot. God has given us callings, promptings, responsibilities and treasures...all chirping for our attention.
We want to move forward. We feel responsible to. But the counter-logical "next move" is sometimes not to make a move, and to just rest and experience God's presence.
Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ (13) If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
(14) The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” ~Exodus 33:12
If we are looking for a sign to stop and rest, it's nestled here in the Bible. Peer closer into the pages and see what Jesus (even Jesus) did when He was serving His Father. Read what God promised to Moses. And embrace what God promises us.
And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. ~2 Thessalonians 1:7-12
Let's hide away and chill-out and rest today. God will provide it if we will stop hopping long enough to experience it.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." ~Matthew 11:28
