Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

(8) If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

(9) If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, (10) even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

(11) If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” (12) even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.  ~Psalm 139:7-12

Where is the "far side of the sea"?
Have you ever looked out from a ship out on the water?  The flat expanse of water seems to extend forever, and then cease.

The far side of the sea?  Who can see it?  None of us.  Surely that is why people of all ages thought that the world was flat until around the Middle Ages: because....we can't fathom where the fathoms of the seas cease.  By vision, it continues into the horizon, and so it is an optical illusion for us to find the far side of the sea.

So--is the "far side of the sea" an actual location?  Is it an expression?  Is the "far side of the sea" a state of heart (if we are referencing our positioning/alignment with Jesus?)

We can't know where the far side of the sea is, but there is One who knows.
He made the sea and (visible/comprehendible to us or not), God knows exactly where it begins and where the far side ends.  When Job questioned God, the Lord "reminded" Job of His Almighty authority:

“Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth and issued from the womb;
(9) When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band;
(10) When I fixed My limit for it, and set bars and doors; (11) When I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, and here your proud waves must stop!’  ~Job 38:8-11

This God...this God that told the sea where to start and stop: He knows exactly where the far side of the sea is (He made the sea!), and this holy God tell us that He is always with us, even if and even when we settle on the far side of the sea.

But there is no settling when we are far from the Lord, is there?  There is no settling, there is no peace, there is no joy when we are far from our Father.

So come home today.

Sail back to the Savior and His wide-open arms with nail-pierced hands (pierced for us).  Just as we can't fathom where the fathoms of the seas cease...we have no idea the depth of love that our Lord has for us.  And we can never outrun it, or out-sin it, or disqualify ourselves from it.

God loves you so much.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

(21) “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

(22) “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. (23) Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. (24) For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.  ~Luke 15:20-24

If we have been settling on the far side of the sea...running from the One who we cannot outrun: come home to Jesus today.

If we have been held captive on the far side of the sea, due to our shame or guilt or unworthiness before the holy One...let's sail our ship back into harbor with our Father.  He's waiting for us.

There is nowhere that we go that our Lord is not already there.  And we are mistaken if we have bought into satan's lie that our Lord is not longing for relationship with us.  He is.

...while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him...
he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.  ~Luke 15:20

We can't see the far side of the sea, but (for any number of reasons) some of us are there.  Our Heavenly Father does not want us there.  He wants us near.

And even if we are there, He is too.   ...if I settle on the far side of the sea, (10) even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.  ~Psalm 139:9-10

God's hand is guiding us today.  His right hand is holding us fast (firm/safe/protected).

Sail back to our sovereign Savior today.
The far side of the sea...is not too far for Him.  Let Him shine into our dark places (...for darkness is as light to you.  ~Psalm 139:12) and He will set a course for us to come home to Him.
