Corona Devo 1763
On vacation recently, it was about 12:45 AM on a brand-new
day, but I was finally wrapping up the previous one. Stepping outside, I wanted to take-in the stars
and sea for a moment before going to bed.
Gazing out, something caught my eye from the right, and
in turning my face, I saw what looked to me like a large bird. It had a big wingspan, and they were
outstretched, but the unique and amazing thing that I recall was that the head
and torso of the bird were illuminated.
Glowing, but not exactly: “illuminated” is the most appropriate word
that I can find.
And then the bird dropped back a few hundred yards,
and it changed to look more like a glowing light in the near-distance.
But it moved. I
watched it move up and down and forward and back for about ten minutes until I
decided that my husband should come and view with me. He woke with a start, but his squinty eyes
grew large as we watched a single(?) light jitter and bounce around the sky and horizon.
I took some pictures and a video too, but neither did
justice to whatever we caught sight of that night. It was something.
Was it a bird?
A plane? A drone?
One of our family members is sure that it was light
reflections or refractions from a neighboring person or ship.
Maybe.
But in a thoughtful and yet serious tone, one of our
other family members looked into my eyes and said matter-of-factly, “Maybe you
saw an angel”.
I would be the last one to claim that, however.
The most exposure that I have had to angels are in the
Bible when the angel Gabriel visited Zechariah to tell him about John the
Baptist being born to him and his wife Elizabeth (Luke 1:5-20), and then when Gabriel visited
Mary to announce the oncoming birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-31).
Those are the “angel” Scriptures
that I am familiar with in the Bible.
Until this morning when my daily Bible reading
included Psalm 89. Join me in
sharing in it, won’t you?
Psalm 89
(1) I will sing of the Lord’s
unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your
faithfulness.
(2) Your unfailing love will last
forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens…
(5) All heaven will praise your
great wonders, Lord; myriads of angels will praise you for your
faithfulness.
(6) For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What
mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? (7) The highest
angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all
who surround his throne.
(8) O Lord God of Heaven’s
Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord? You
are entirely faithful.
(9) You rule the oceans. You subdue their
storm-tossed waves. (10) You crushed the great sea
monster. You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
(11) The heavens are yours, and the
earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all…
(13) Powerful is your
arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high
in glorious strength. (14) Righteousness and justice are the
foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you
as attendants.
(15) Happy are those who hear the
joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your
presence, Lord.
(16) They rejoice all day long in
your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. (17) You
are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us
strong.
(18) Yes, our protection comes from
the Lord, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king. ~Psalm 89:1-2, 5-11, 13-18

Although I love to read the Bible, these
verses on angels were “new” to me today.
What did we see?
I am not sure, but I am sure of what Psalm 89 is saying
to us about angels: they pale in comparison and power to our Lord. (For who in all of heaven can compare
with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord?
(7) The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far
more awesome than all who surround his throne. ~Psalm 89:6).
All glory and honor and praise belong to (only) our
Lord and our Father God (Revelation 5:13).
We certainly saw something outside that evening, but
should my attention focus on chattering and questioning and postulating about who
or what it was? Absolutely not.
…myriads of angels will
praise you… ~Psalm 89:5
Just like the angels: our attention and affections
should (daily) remain steadfast on our Lord…and I will sing of Him alone
today.
I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing
love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. ~Psalm 89:1
It may have been a drone. It might have been a satellite. And it is even possible that it was an angel,
because the heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in
the world is yours—you created it all, Lord (Psalm 89:11),
But regardless of what was illuminating light that
night, Jesus Christ is the One that we turn our face and hearts to, and He
radiates the true Light of life into our daily lives.
The Son is the radiance of God’s
glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all
things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for
sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
(4) So he became as much
superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. The Son Superior to Angels.
(5) For
to which of the angels did God ever say, You are my Son; today I have become
your Father”?
Or again, “I will be his Father, and he
will be my Son”?
(6) And again, when God
brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels
worship him.”
(7) In speaking of the
angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.”
~Hebrews 1:3-7
Heavenly Father, may we radiate your light and love and hope today to those that we encounter. The unfolding of your words gives light (Psalm 119:130), and your life is the light of men (John 1:4) Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord (Psalm 89:15). Illuminate our day and night and lives today, Lord. Amen.
Blessings,
sarah
