Is it time to update our resume?
When creating our own (resume), we usually list our (self-identified) qualifying
features, but (in the Bible), God gives us His feature-listings
for a man (or woman) after His own heart.
When was the last time we updated our spiritual resume? God is giving us timely and timeless bullet
points that are life-changing, and it is up to us if we would like to
add them to our personal resume.
The Lord has given us His (holy) laundry list of items to strive for and Paul cites them in the book of I Timothy as he encourages elders in the church to press on in these ways.
~~
Who are elders of the church?
An elder is a leader at the church and world.
An elder is a leader in the church and world.
An elder is a leader for the church and world.
Elders are leaders and example-setters, but regardless of the “official” title of elder, all of us should seek to fill our personal resume with God’s criteria listings. He writes them here and on our hearts for a reason.
This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be an elder, he desires an honorable position.”
(2) So an elder must be a man whose life is above reproach.
He must be faithful to his wife.
He must exercise self-control,
live wisely,
and have a good reputation.
He must enjoy having guests in his home,
and he must be able to teach.
(3) He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent.
He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money.
(4) He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him.
(5) For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?
(6) An elder must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall.
(7) Also, people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not be disgraced and fall into the devil’s trap...
(11) In the same way, their wives must be respected and must not slander others. They must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they do. ~I Timothy 3:1-7, 11

Are we wondering about a decision that needs to be made today?
Are we tempted to ____ today?
Have we forgotten God’s call (and preferred qualities) on our life?
What would a leader of the church do? How would an elder respond?
~~~
Let’s refer to God’s resume character-criteria as we seek answers and direction in our life today.
Regardless of our age (“elder”-ly or not)… an “elder” in the faith exhibits wisdom and a deepened faith and understanding of faith.
Let’s adhere to the Bible's listing of qualities that God seeks from us and let’s update our resume and our lives to exhibit the qualities of an elder today.
Blessings,
sarah
