I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you... (7) For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
(8) So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord... (9) For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.
(13) Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. (14) Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you. ~2 Timothy 1:5, 7-14
Think back... Is there someone?
Do we have a "grandmother Lois" or a "mother Eunice"? ...Someone who built into us as we grew up...but not just upbringing and morals...faith.
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. ~2 Timothy 1:5
In speaking to Timothy, Paul told him that he "remembered" Timothy's genuine faith. It's a beautiful and a special concept that Paul is pointing out to Timothy: he remembers the faith that Timothy has because Paul experienced that faith first in Timothy's grandmother (Lois) and also in his mother (Eunice).
Timothy's faith resembled the faith of his mom and grandmother. It's such a neat thing to visualize, and so very unique that Paul could recognize that faith as it was passed down in generations.
But...can we visualize the passed-down concept also? Think back... Was there someone? Do we have a "grandmother Lois" or a "mother Eunice" (type-person or family member) who taught us about genuine faith and what it looked like?
Did we have a godly grandparent or prayerful mom or dad who modeled faith for us? And how would it feel if someone recognized their strong faith in us?
What a special legacy.
The roles of parent and grandparent are privileges. Did we have a family member (or non-family member) who built into us and raised us up in following the Lord?
Remember them today. Allow Scripture to remind us that faith can be passed down, and it can be remembered throughout generations.
Lord, we praise you for family and friends that You placed in our (younger) lives to build us up in the faith. We are grateful for your cross-generational plan for people, and help us to enter into that cycle today. Amen.
And of course, we know the next question: Are we being a someone to someone? Is there somebody younger (or younger in faith) than us that we can invest in? Of course we are not perfect and we are sinful, but we are saved, and we can share our story with someone about how we balance those two dichotomies in our life. Explaining how we live out our faith is teaching others about faith. And this whole cycle is God's whole plan.
So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord... (9) For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. ~2 Timothy 1:8-9
~~~
Do we have a "grandmother Lois" or a "mother Eunice" in our life or in our memory? We thank God for them and their influence on our genuine faith.
Also--let's make the decision and take the time to share the genuine faith that fills us with someone in the next generation. What if...even after we're gone, people will still be able to "remember our genuine faith", because it not only filled us, but it (then) filled another (others).
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you... ~2 Timothy 1:5
