Ah, baby cakes.  No--I'm not sharing a cute nickname that I have for my husband or a childhood term for one of our kids.  Baby cakes.  It's what my gramma and papa used to call the little white powdered sugar donuts that they would put out for breakfast sometimes when we slept over their house. I don't think that they made up the term, "baby cakes", (it might have been the brand of little powdered sugar donuts), but it was what we all called them.

Baby cakes.  It's such a great name and those little white donuts lived up to the great moniker.  Baby cakes were delicious.  They were so good.  I can remember sitting at my grandparents' counter or kitchen table, and when your teeth and taste buds sank into a baby cake--that soft, moist, sweet, tiny powder sugar-caked donut...well, it was just heaven.

But that was 30 or 40 years ago.  I haven't thought about baby cakes in quite a while.  However, while grocery shopping this week, I happened to pick up a container of powdered sugar donuts.  As I poured them onto a plate, the baby cakes smell hit me and drew me back in time.  And as I arranged a few of them on the serving plate, their soft powder sugar-caked white flesh was so soft and familiar in my hand.  The smell and the feel of those little donuts brought me right back to gramma and papa's breakfast table.  And then...when I sampled one of them: it was the same sweet baby cakes taste and memory...all over again.

I see little white powdered sugar donuts all the time in stores and I've eaten them over the years, but I certainly don't regularly experience nostalgic memories of the babycakes that used to grace my gramma's table.

But what a wonderful thing it was to have that happen to me today.

So...how long has it been?

No, not since we had a baby cake (mini powdered sugar) donut.  How long has it been since we've tasted and seen that the Lord is good?

Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!  ~Psalm 34:8

When was the last time that we spent quality time with the Lord?  (And a "quick prayer" doesn't count.)

I hope it hasn't been 30 or 40 years since we connected with Christ, or became vulnerable with our Lord.

When we are younger, or young-in-our-faith, we have a tendency to be more energetic in our faith and even in our belief.  But time should not dull any facet of our understanding (and appreciation) of our Lord and all that He has done for us.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).  Why have we (possibly) changed in our response to Him?

Think back today.  Recall the joy of asking Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, and the freedom that this brought us (brings us!).

And let's go back to that joy.  Jesus is awaiting us to experience it once again.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.  ~Psalm 51:12

Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.  ~Zechariah 1:3

Jesus is no baby cake, but if we'll just slow down long enough to take a nibble of the Bible...and let it nourish us...

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.  ~James 4:8

If we will quiet our busy mind and life long enough to hear God's still-small voice within us and all around us....

Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty.  ~Malachi 3:7

If we will just turn our face and heart back to God, instead of staring at the world's people, treasures and trophies...

This is how the Lord responds: “If you return to me, I will restore you so you can continue to serve me.  If you speak good words rather than worthless ones, you will be my spokesman.  You must influence them; do not let them influence you!  ~Jeremiah 15:19

If we will just focus on Jesus today, it would be so good.  If we will spit-out the world and let our teeth and tastebuds sink into God's Word and His Truths for us today... well, it would be heaven.   (And it will lead us there.)

Let's let the memory of our greatest joys-of-Jesus jog our memory to draw us nearer to Jesus today.

What a wonderful thing that would be to have happen to us today.

No matter how long it's been since we enjoyed time and intimacy with the Lord...He's longing for our return.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.  ~Luke 15:20

Let's get nostalgic for God and for our time together with Him.  We are going to have to purpose that time for Him, but He's worth it, and it will be the same sweet Savior and memory...all over again.  (And if we have not acknowledged to Jesus that we are sinners in need of a Savior...well, then today is a good day to change our eternal address.)

Let's live with Jesus for the rest of our life!

If it has been a while since we've gotten serious about seeking Him--today's the day.  God is still the same amazing God that He has always been: sometimes we just get too busy or distracted to notice.

Let's encounter the Lord all over again today.

Come, let us return to the Lord.  ~Hosea 6:1
