The other day both of our boys went to an open interview for some jobs in our area.  Prior to their departure, I went over a few quick tips with them so that they might represent well: give a firm handshake, look them in the eye, communicate clearly/honestly/and genuinely, and...look good!  Dress for success: a tie and combed hair go a long way and first impressions make more of a difference than we might ever know.

These were my quick-tips for interviewing well.

The Bible does the same thing for us in Hebrews Chapter 13, but beyond mere preparation for an interview, these verses give us quick-tips to succeed in the faith.  Best practices for following God and living for him.

Are we ready for the Bible's life-pointers?

  • (1)Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.
  • (2) Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!
  • (3) Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself.
  • Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.
  • (4) Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.
  • (5) Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
  • (6) So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.  What can mere people do to me?”
  • (7) Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.
  • (8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
  • (9) Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace...~Hebrews 13:1-9

Prior to their interview, my boys didn't ask me "Why?" they should look their interviewer in the eye, or "why" a firm handshake and looking-sharp kicks off a professional relationship positively.

The boys didn't ask "why", they just accepted my teaching.  They went to their interviews looking dapper and clutching their resumes.

We need not ask God "why" His commands are His commands.  But we can trust that every word He has spoken is for His glory and for our being made more and more into his likeness.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (17) For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. (18) So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  ~2 Corinthians 4:16-18

We can and should accept (by faith) God's teachings in the Bible.  They will set us on the right path...on the spiritually successful path...and on the path to a full and fulfilled life.

Over the years, I've had a number of interviewees show up poorly dressed.  And (in my experience) too many people applying for jobs at companies I've worked for had no idea what the company they were interviewing for actually did/sold/stood-for.  And many of them (most?) simply could have prepared more effectively for our (interview) time together...and they might have gotten the job.

Have we prepared well to serve the Lord today?

Are we aware that God clearly outlines His commands and Laws for us and for our well-living in the Bible?  God gives us spiritual quick-tips through His Word.  And: He tells us how to prepare.  We need not ask "why" or how He knows what is best for our outcome...we just need to read and obey..and trust Him.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (14) But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.  ~Matthew 7:13-14

Let's find it today. Hebrews 13 gives us some excellent quick-tips and best-practices for living for the Lord.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.   ~Hebrews 13:8
