Corona Devo 1945
I passed a truck pulling a trailer boasting "French Fries" the other day, and in the line of traffic not far behind it, I then passed trailers announcing "Cotton Candy" and "Funnel Cakes".
If there had been one more trailer in the caravan advertising "Fried Veggies"...I would have done a u-turn to follow it!
It's in my blood to love carnival and fair food.
DNA is real: for example, my brother has red hair because our dad and grandfather did. My eyes are blue because my mom's were. And I'm not sure exactly which branch of "science" the fair-food-gene falls into, but I love fair food because my parents and grandparents did before me.
Like the DNA of blond hair or brown eyes...if you grew up enjoying going to county fairs and eating fair food, then you are (most likely) going to have a soft spot (sweet spot?) for fair food today...and I do.
Fried veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, onion rings, zucchini, and sometimes a carrot or pickle slice), corn dogs, fresh squeezed lemonade, sausage sandwiches, cotton candy, caramel apples and candy apples too: Yes, please.
I can't wait to taste some of those delicacies come August at our county fair.
Yes, I know that ffied food is fattening and unhealthy. But (Guess what?), I also truly enjoy the tomatoes and zucchini and peppers and nectarines and peaches and plums that my husband grows in our garden and yard. I like healthy, but (sometimes!) I also love the cooked-in-oil delicious crisp of a basketful of fried vegetables at a carnival or fair.
Do I eat food fried in oil every day? Of course not.
Will my teeth rot out if I'm biting into caramel or candy apples regularly? Most likely.
But I don't eat that junk regularly.
However, once in a while...we can indulge. We can enjoy. We can eat and not feel guilty. We can enjoy something even if it's off of our (food/finance/life) diet. Or out of our norm...or a treat we don't usually afford.
And that's okay.
The Bible, God's word, tells us to work hard each day.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, (24) since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ~Colossians 3:23
We are not called to be lazy or to live off the fruit of other people's labor or to take advantage of the government, or our family, or our employers, or anyone else for that matter.
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. ~2 Thessalonians 3:23-24
Part of life is living life and that also means working at life with the gifts that God has given us. We are not made to merely exist, but to fulfill the purposes that God has created us for...in order to bring Him glory!
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. (11) Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. ~I Peter 4:10-11
Life-in-Christ is responsibility, however...coupled with that...(like fair food once in a while): we can indulge. We can enjoy the blessings of this world and this life...and not feel guilty.
King Solomon, (son of the great Biblical King David), had it all. He was the wisest man that ever lived (I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! ~I Kings 3:12), and Solomon enjoyed the depths of every facet of life. But in the end, he gave simplistic advice that both paupers and royalty (whichever category we find ourselves in today) can glean wisdom from: Enjoy life.
A.K.A.--Eat the fair food once in a while.
Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do. ~Ecclesiastes 9:7
We can enjoy life sometimes...and we should.
Life goes by very quickly, and just about the time we realize that...is when we are wishing that we had enjoyed it more along the way.
Find satisfaction in today: a person can do nothing better than that.
A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, (25) for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? (26) To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. ~Ecclesiastes 2:25-26
Solomon saw that enjoying life (finding satisfaction) is from the hand of God.
So many people do not find satisfaction in their own toil or in their life. But (Aha!), the catch is...God. Only the Lord in our life provides the receptive/aware/grateful environment for us to truly enjoy life (find satisfaction in our toil).
This too, I see, is from the hand of God, (25) for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25).
So...find Jesus today, and go ahead--follow the "French Fry" trailer today.
It's okay. We can enjoy life sometimes...and we should.
So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun. ~Ecclesiastes 8:15
